That's a bad feeling when you don't get traction in that position too.

It is no fun. I have 4x4 for many reasons, do a lot of driving in sand, mud, and all kinds of conditions. Only needed it for a boat ramp a few times but the few times I’ve needed it I was thankful I had it. I will say this, if you’re not mechanically inclined you should always consider the fact that a 4x4 requires more maintenance and if you have to pay for it that’s a lot more $$$. You have a transfer case, a front diff, front driveshaft, hub actuators, etc. lot more stuff to keep up with and a lot more stuff to break.

It was down right embarrassing to have to ask for several folks to climb in the bed of the truck to help me get up the ramp.
The problem with a 2 wheel drive is, that unless you have a Locker type of rear end, only 1 wheel will be trying to grab. This usually ends up with the wheel without traction spinning.

I always buy 4wd because I hardly ever see anyone driving a 2wd truck anymore. Resale will be a factor if it’s a 2wd.

If you buy a boat with all the options, and buy other stuff with all the options....TV, Rod and Reels, fish finder..

Why not buy a vehicle car or truck with all the options.....car and truck have options I haven't used....I never use the heated seats, still paid for them....

That said, I'll never own a 2wd truck again. Owned them for years - took me a couple times being stuck to decide I didn't want to do that anymore.

4 wheel drive is the only way to go...that said the reason you are considering 4 wheel drive is not a good one. Unless you are on a crazy steep ramp or launching without a ramp you should not need 4 wheel...that said, get 4WD!

Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.

I have a 2 wheel drive Ram 1500 with a limited slip rear end running on street tires. I did add the 4WD tow hooks on the front just in case and keep a tow strap behind the seat. Someday I am going to need it. I needed it twice on the previous 2WD truck and didn't have it the first time.

Never a 2. Been there done that. Great tires can help but not when you get in a pickle.

Not to mention slightly lower MPGs. If the OP does not go off road all he needs is a truck with limited slip or better a locker. I had a 2wd Tacoma with a locker and never had a problem on any ramp. On most ramps the limited slip worked fine and don't even remember engaging the locker.

All depends on the ramp. I’ve always towed my boat with a 4WD SUV or PIckup. I was glad I had 4WD on several occasions, specially when the water is low or ramp is steep.

2wd with e-locker diff for me.

As noted earlier, a bit of technique goes a long way. Getting some momentum while the boat is still floating makes it so much easier than trying to pull it upwards from a dead stop.

So you want a 2WD with an EXPENSIVE aftermarket differential, and then need a running start?

Sounds like ya got it all figured out.
