I did have one time fishing on the Sabine where we caught limits. It was beautiful weather, around 70 degrees and sunshine. Next day was bitter cold and snow flurries. Still a red hot bite, but we had to leave them biting because we couldn't feel our hands. grin

I figured the weather change would have shut the bite off, but it had zero impact.

I went to Newman Bottom this afternoon. The water is still up a couple feet, good flow and decent clarity. I would call it silty. The fish are moving up. I saw 3 stringers with about 15 to 20 fish, 3 stringers with 8 to 10 fish and a few with one or two fish.

I ended up catching 20 white bass.

I also heard a couple reports that there have been big crowds at Irwin bridge the last couple days. They are catching both crappie and white bass.

Thanks Jmoe. Looks like it will be game on the next few weeks. Probably going to regret it but can only go on weekends so I will go Sunday for the first time and make the 3 hr round trip hopefully to at least get one fish to bite and fight like they do. I need that rush like a meth addict needs meth. It's been a couple years.

Fish didn’t disappoint this evening!

Left at sunset with crappie and whitebass in the cooler.

Reports of whitebass limits coming from Newman’s last few days; shoulder to shoulder at Overlook Marina as limits of crappie are coming out.

Let me echo what many others have said... this is shaping up to be a banner whitebass spawning run & season on the Yegua...
But let me also emphasize that this means there will be thousands of fishermen beating the banks of the creek in the state park.
Please do not litter and always be respectful of others.
Try to be kind and helpful in your interactions with other fishers and nature in general.

The state park system is for the general public and that includes everyone regardless of culture or origin of birth.

Some fishermen like myself are only in it for the fun and challenge but many others are fishing for dinner so it matters much more to them...

Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day..
Teach a man to fish and you won't see him sitting at home again for a long while until threatened with divorce... wink

Nearly everything has come together perfectly for the Lake Somerville whitebass spawning run to be much better than average for 2022.
The rain fell in sufficient amounts through the new year to bring the creeks and lake to levels that make the run possible and even better than in years past.

J-Moe and I have had some early success in January with a minor rise in the Yegua but the numbers weren't there yet until now.

So it's time to fill the freezer! Head to the Lake Somerville State Park and get yourself down the the Yegua!

I went to NB this morning. I got there around 7 AM. The bite was on immediately. About 7:45 it started to sprinkle and the north wind started to blow. I fished until 8:10 AM when it started to rain harder. I ended up catching 24.

The fly of choice today was the Yegua Yoda. Great it is, a white bass fly roflmao

Gotta satisfy the white bass itch so I will be making the 90 minute drive to Newman's to see if I can catch a few. Probably not going to be good but I don't care. Gotta try it. Unfortunately I can only fish weekends. I will be the one that has the blue pull cart with a blue ice chest in it if you want to say hello. Ready for the white bass chaos!
