Hi fellas, I’d like some yellow cat info if you guys wouldn’t mind sharing some. I asking in regards to lake fishing, not a river or creek. I know they prefer live bait or fresh dead, but I’m more curious if they tend to school up or are they loners? If you catch a big one, is that a good spot for future fishing or is it more of a one time thing. I guess I’m asking if they are territorial or roamers?
Do they prefer a certain type of water, bluff walls or flats?
Generally, any info that helps to catch them is welcomed.

They are very territorial but go on the roam feed for 1 hour out of the day. They are difficult to catch in cold water as their metabolism really slows down. If you catch one in a spot it’s generally a good spot to catch a few more. They do not school up but they will share the same piece of structure with a few fish. If you catch one in a certain area there is a good chance you can go back and catch one on that exact same area. They prefer live baits here in Texas but you can catch them on cut bait from time to time. They are very elusive in lakes and guys will set up on em 3 ways. You can either set up on structure they hide in and wait for them to get active and come out. You can also set up on their highways to their feeding grounds or set up where they are going to go and feed. They hide under rocks, under the root flare of submerged timber, log jams, etc. They feed on shallow flats, points, and backwaters. They start getting active in mid to late February and really fire up in March and April as they feed up for the Spawn which is usually in May around here.

Goggle eye perch, warmouth, bullhead catfish are all great live bait. I have caught on fresh shad/perch cut bait. Rocky shorelines and heavy cover are a good bet. May-Aug in the rivers and creeks when they spawn is the best time to catch monsters and lots of good eaters too. If you can find a river or creek with a low water dam and river flow you will slay them.

I go after them as if they were a ambush predator. I look for sunken structure, anchor upstream, and fan cast around it. I'm lucky if I get three fish out of the same spot. A good spot will constantly produce fish unless it gets lots of pressure or the water level changes. If you miss one don't worry, they will circle back pretty quick. A lost a 30lb'er last year when my leader wrapped around something and I broke off. 10 minutes later I caught it with my first hook still in its jaw.
Waiting on Bob Davis' next selfie

Noodling thrashes the nest Flip. They should be left alone during the spawn in my opinion.

Only time I've ever caught a flathead was crappie fishing with live minnows, it's fun trying to put a 6 or 7 lb fish in the boat on a 8 foot ultralight rod, with a 15 series spinning reel and 4 lb test though. LOL

No worry about noodling, I’m way too cowardly to do that! Ok, so the reason for my question. I found a school of white bass last weekend, I was dropping a jigging spoon on them, then hooked into a monster that broke me off on the second pull of drag. Rigged on another spoon and on the next cast, this bit. Took me over 15mins to get him in. My first spoon wasn’t in him, so I know this was a different fish. Went back a few days later and hooked into #3 big cat, fought him for about 10mins and he managed to pull the spoon out. Decided I’m going big cat hunting, but wanted to make sure these fish would still be in the area before I spent much money on a stronger rig. This one went 51lbs.

Never have enough things to spend money on, right! Knot, something off with my AT. When viewing on the lake, the snow in the graph isn’t visible; but when I did play back of my log, it was horrible. Couldn’t figure out how to get it transferred to the phone, so I took a video from my phone. It lost color and amplified the snow on the screen. Looks way better live, horrible on playback. Here is catfish number 3, right when he hit my lure. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2022/02/full-35324-127103-d7320e4d_1b67_47b0_b753_d7f6e6852ea7.jpeg)
