I saw a video online....watching a guy jigging for crappies and he was using 10# braid. Growing up we used 6# mono and sometimes 4#.

What do you guys use and why?

I recently switched to 6 lb high-vis mono because I am easily irritated when the wind is blowing (Texas) and I cant see what my line is doing (age). I found that braid seems to get tangled up easier in windy conditions and is more difficult to follow with my eyes. There was also the occasional time where the line would pull through the jig eye on some jigs, although the quality of the jig plays a part in that as well.

I have considered going back to braid for the increased sensitivity (as there are high-vis options) and just use a mono leader, I just haven't moved much past the consideration stage yet (lazy).

This but ever now and then it will slip through an eye depending on the jig head.

I’ve gone to using 8lb braid tied to a barrel swivel with a Palomar knot, then tie about a 12-18” 6lb flourocarbon leader using uni-knots.. when you hang up and break off, 99% of the time, the flourocarbon breaks so your braid and swivel are still intact… it’s an extra step, but I personally have noticed more bites vs tied directly to braid…. That’s my personal set up

10 braid- I like the sensitivity and no stretch when I’m jigging.

I use 20lb Mad Braid with a 12lb Pline mono leader.....
I too catch other species that I want to see and feel.....
I use a mono leader to prevent the Braid from slipping off the eye of hooks and also to make it easier to break if I happened to get a snag that I can't free up ......

Depends on what I’m doing! 6lb K9 or clear blue stren on my dock shooters. 10-12 lb K9 floro on my timber rods and 15lb braid on other timber rods. I think it’s Mad braid currently. I’ve tried several and haven’t found one yet I’m really happy with.

I have tried many braided lines, and several a very good, but Sufix 832 HI-Vis yellow (15 lb.) is my pick for vertical jigging. Braided line does take a little getting used to, and will wrap around the eyes easily, but is very manageable. You won't like this at first, but will quickly learn how to avoid it.

Reasons for tying to straight Hi-Vis braid (just my opinion):

- Sufix 832 is soft (not like Spiderwire)
- Unless in gin clear water, crappie don't care. (I avoid clear water)
- I can see the Hi-Vis line easily
- No stretch
- Extremely sensitive
- Doesn't have memory like mono
- I don't have to respool my reels like mono. If the line becomes faded, pull it off and run it back through backwards. In the long run, I spend a lot less money on line.
- When hung up in brush, I reel down and pull, straightening the hook out, bend the hook back and didn't lose the jig and time retying. I prefer to use a light wire hooks for this reason.
- When a fish hits, you "really" feel it, making the fun factor escalate.

20lb PowerPro Super8Slick. Hi-viz yellow. There is a tendency for it to slip through the gap on the eye of some hooks. I quit using a leader 5 years ago. I found no difference in catch rate.

I tried that Bonehead braid on a size 50 spinning reel. I didn’t spool it right cause the darn stuff sticks to the reel and I have to pull it off the reel. Highly frustrating. 6 lb Mr. Crappie Mono doesn’t do that to me and my 8 ft Pro Angler does great.

You ain’t gonna catch any sittin’ on the couch.
