It would not shock me. They may be quoting to go under the house also? If it is cast iron they may be quoting total replacement. The water line won't be cast iron; the sewer line might be. The water line will be PVC, PEX, maybe copper or steel. Yeah did not think that through.

Why not just fix the place it broke/split? Yea, why are you replacing the entire line? They are saying the main line is not up to code. I'm not sure if this is correct, but I was told the plumber may have said it has to be replaced with PEX to meet code. Doesn't make sense to me. Why would PVC not be code on a main water line?

PVC meets code, it could be the burial depth is not up to code

What are they doing? Tunneling under the house and replacing everything beneath it through the foundation too?

Tell her fire them before she hires them. About a $2,000 job max. Did she call John and get Moore?
My dad knew a woman who got a similar bid. They scared her with all the code BS. My dad and a few others did it for her with less than $500 in materials. Of course the plumber can’t give his labor away and has overhead such as insurance and tools such as boring tool.

There are also some that think it’s organized crime.

I use Matrix Plumbing for leak detections in my job and most of the time they do the work as well. I recently had a cast iron drain line claim they did for 30k when customers were originally quoted 75k by Benjamin Franklin. Of the plumbers I run into in my job there are lots of crooks out there so never trust a bid your suspicious of.

You couldn’t get an auto mechanic for that price- why should you get a plumber? 50-60 ft run, under a driveway, equipment, permits, supplies and labor...theres no way shes getting that for under $5-$6k. That area can sustain that kind of money easy. And that would be cheap. And yeah, I think the code talk is BS for charging more money, but Im not in that industry directly and dont know. It was my understanding that a house has to be fixed according to the codes in the year it was built, not brought up to current and ever changing codes. If that were the case, everything in that, or any house, would have to be brought up to code on a yearly basis. Can an industry professional chime in on this if its true or not?

Sounds fishy. City codes allow for repairs
