Either a C or E clip.

Handy plumbing tip for y'all. If your going to be working on items like this, it's always...ALWAYS a good idea to block off the drain with a rag or something as those small parts like clips and screws are somehow magnetically attracted to bounce once and go straight down the drain into the abyss. Experience sometimes isn't very graceful.

I see online it has happened to some folks. The inside portion of the stem breaks loose from the outer housing. They showed tapping the housing and using a bolt and block nut technique to remove it. Similar to a pulley puller, but on the inside.

It does look like a Moen. My initial thought just looking at the pics is you need to just replace the valve cartridge. That should be a $45-$50 cost or you could get a whole repair kit that includes the base and valve cartridge and will run you probably around $125-$150.

It is an older Moen Cartridge.. Inner stem has pulled out and brass cartridges are famous for what happened to you.. I have the tool for pulling the outer cartridge housing here at the shop.. Come by and pick it up..
