I thought of this after posting comments on the Yak alternative video . . . which was fun to watch and later discuss. Some talk in the posts about alternatives, too, of course.

Here's one: Buy a Moccasin 2-man Boat and trailer for about $4500.

Moccasin

And, a story. About 2 years ago, I went to Lake Raven near Huntsville, was getting ready to launch my kayak when I saw a man just after he had pulled his vessel out of the water at the ramp. I immediately new what it was: a Moccasin boat or pirogue. I walked over and said "Nice Moccasin!" and it surprised him that I was familiar with the vessel. He went on to extol its virtues. He told me that one day he was motoring along back in a cove near some boat houses on a lake, saw the Moccasin sitting with its stern almost under water looking rather unused, made contact with its owner and ended up buying it. The owner, like so many boat owners, just wasn't using it. An impulsive purchase is my guess. I believe the man at Raven Lake told me he paid $300 for it, had to do some minor repair work.

I would trust that Moccasin way more than a modified jon boat, but that said I'll just keep my Wilderness Commander 120 for my needs, along with my 14' 1983 Sears Gamefisher powered by a 15 h.p. motor with trolling motor I've had longer than I've owned my kayaks.
My way of thinking is if you want the advantage of a kayak it's all about portability.
If you want a boat, and something you need a trailer to haul it around on, just buy a real boat.

Just one more cast!

Me, too, Jimbo.

I value the ability to grab my kayak, put it on my truck bed and take off . . . over anything else.

I'm fishing out of a Native Ultimate FX Pro 12 paddle kayak and loving it.

If I go back to a pedal kayak, it'll have to be 12 ft or less for me to be happy. I don't want to trailer anything.

Boats=charging batteries and changing them out every four years or so
Annual registration
Trailer hub/bearing annual maintenance.
Big motor = changing lower unit oil once a year. Changing out the impeller every four years. Changing out gas lines and gas filters. Spark plugs, endless list of maintenance.

Kayak = remember to bring the pfd and paddle.

Calm day it would be nice and comfy, bad day it could be easily swamped.

A good rule of angling philosophy is not to interfere with another fisherman's ways of being happy, unless you want to be hated.
