How would one go about fishing Belton with no experience on it whatsoever?

yall need to make a trip down to look around. It's not like anything you have ever fished before but you'll probably still find a few on beds and some in post spawn. It's a really cool lake.

Also, make room arrangments NOW. Places to stay are a little scarce down there and you don't want to stay in the hotels on 35 unless you absolutely have to.

It can be a tough lake to catch 5 decent keepers on except for spring time/shad spawn.

Awful tough right now. Depending on weather I'd suggest waiting until mid to late Feb.

I caught one on Monday from shore. Maybe 1-1/2lbs on an IKA.

Doing his homework before he goes in May.

I like the enthusiasm and eagerness, but you’ll need to qualify through your division for Regionals first, and then qualify for State through your respective Regional event first. Don’t just assume you’ll qualify for State. Over the years I’ve seen several very good teams that have finished the season in the Top 10 of the AOY standings that overlook Regionals thinking they would just cruise on into the State Championship, only to be watching from the shore, so to speak. It’s good to look forward to an upcoming championship in May and even start trying to get an idea of the water and such, just don’t overlook the qualifying tournaments ahead of you that are still yet to be fished. Nothing is a given in any sport, and especially fishing.

I captained a team a few years ago and we as a collective team worried more about State on Ray Roberts than Regionals on Rayburn. We didn’t make it out of Regionals that year. Never doing that again!!

Good luck to you for the rest of your season and I sincerely hope you do indeed qualify for State on Belton.

We are looking good in standings at the moment but you never know what will happen at the tourneys in between! We definitely are aiming for state but will have to work to get there, only reason I’m asking about Belton is because if we do make it out of regionals alive then it would be a whole new game for me/partner since we don’t ever fish highland reservoirs… just trying to get ahead of the curve!

to me belton is a pretty easy lake to catch fish on, the size a lot of times can be a problem. shakey head, drop shot, weightless fluke, topwater and crankbaits are basically all i throw on belton. spring and fall are good, winter can be good somedays and summer u need to fish at night or really early in the morning

Belton is that lake that can make you think you forgot how to fish. Then a school of smallies might pass by and make you look like an elite. One thing you can count on on Belton is that the bite is ever-changing. You might hammer them in one spot one day and not get a bite the next. I've had 20 fish days and had only one big enough to weigh. Then I had a half day where I only caught two, but had over 10 pounds and the kicker was a smallie. Plan on catching less than 13 pounds a day. 10 a day should get you in the money. If they are biting, choice of bait really doesn't matter, you will catch them. If they're not, then you'll think you're fishing the dead sea.

Couldn’t have said it better. I love the lake and have done decent out there. I feel like I could fish a tourney out there with no practice and have the same shot as if I’d fished it 3 days straight. Hero to zero very quick.
