I recently re ignited my interest in flyfishing and have started tying a little too. I have a 10 ft 5 wt. I am really looking forward to the white bass run, especially the one on the Sabine. Sometimes the whitebass are up shallow but a lot of the time they are out deep on the bottom. If you have fished the sabine run you know that the river is deep and has a strong current at times, you also know how big the fish can be. I plan on fishing clousers, WIth spinning gear we usually use 1/4 oz jigs to get down. do I need to respool with sinking line, sinking tip? or can I just add split shot to my floating line? Any tips for my setup?

For starters, I've wanted to fish the Sabine run for years, so take me with you! I've added a sinking tip for picking them out of deep holes and have also used split shot above the fly. Good luck!

If I had a bigger boat you'd be welcome to come. My little flat bottom is about maxxed out with my gear, a chessie, and myself but you definitely should make a trip out there. Feel Free to p.m. me about the run if you have questions, not that I am a pro by any means but I try to go at least once every year.

If you're in the Dallas area, next Monday's Dallas Fly Fishers meeting topic is fishing for white bass. It would be a great opportunity to learn more about fly fishing for them. The presentation starts at 7:00. There will be a fly tying demo at 5:00 with a break so everyone call grab supper at 6:00.
The location is the First Methodist Church of Richardson on 75, next to the old Barlow's store.
Everyone is welcome to attend.

Is that church the new standard location for Dallas Fly Fishers? Gosh, I wish it were a brewery instead! Barlows was a hidden gem for fly tiers, but the last I know they have closed it to walk-in traffic - snatching defeat from the jaws of victory!
PS - A great brewery in Denton would host anytime!

Few things the Sabine is by far the biggest average size sandbass In The greatest state in this country! You’re going to be fishing deep and if you’ve gone out there and fish conventional you know it is very muddy at best dark tea colored. So I go a little bit unorthodox when I am there with the fly rod. Sink line full sink is a must I will fish a little bit longer later than normal and add split shot on top of that add a double surgeons loop 3 feet from the fly. If you go buy a big box tackle store they make some little tiny willow leaf spinner blades I will take a size 6 Clowser and tie a piece of fluorocarbon to a swivel and add a jump ring. Make sure that the jumper ring comes out right past the tail and I’ll add that little willow leaf. Just that little extra vibration really helps in that cloudy water. Also I prefer to park on the sand bars and get out and fish and you better be ready to cast every time a boat comes by the rolling waves in the sound of the motor gets them fired up they will push up onto the sandbars to lay eggs in the waves so the eggs can sit in the current. I have personally had the best luck on the downstream side of the bend off of the sandbars because it gives you just enough Eddie that resting Fish will hang out there to move up. Good luck it’s prime time out there as early as the run is. I have not checked the current level but if that little waterfall is exposed up above Jane’s place I would make the run up there to concentrate the fish better for you. It’s also really good with the flyrod at the mouths of the little creeks coming in! Hope to see a good report. That fish was first cast right off janes beach. Man they get big there!. ![[Linked Image]](https://i.postimg.cc/G3JQn0t8/AF1-A3-B0-F-3-EB0-4074-8-B0-F-70942-ED328-E3.jpg)

I appreciate the tips Mr. Hunter. I actually remember a thread you posted years ago about fly fishing up there and ever since I have it in my mind that I want to do the same. I'll make a trip out there in a few weeks and post a report. Thank you Sir

On the Sabine, I like to use a conventional set-up to find the concentrations of fish and then switch over to the fly rig once they are located. A full sink line, relatively short leader, and a clouser are about all you need to be very successful there. Here's the Sabine record WB on the fly I caught in mid-Feb. 2016. Caught just like described above. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2022/01/full-8953-126380-white_bass_sabine_record_17.2_full_resized.jpg)
