In the Gonzales area, the only access is below the Lake Wood dam and Gonzales Independence Park. There is no public access at the failed dam at Lake Gonzales. The paddling trail that starts at Lake Wood Dam, is an all day trip to the take out at Gonzales. No time for fishing. ALL the property on both sides of the river is private property. There is no public access above the failed Lake Wood Dam. didn't know this. goin off way way back memories, stayed at a place called catfish johns while working on gonzales rehab hospital and a motel in halletsville. it was right on the river/lake but no idea at which dam, bass fishing used to be pretty good out of a tin boat. Catfish Johns was on Lake Gonzales (H-4) The dam broke a couple of months ago and drained the lake. Lake Gonzales and Lake Wood are gone forever. dang, had a blast stayin there and fished almost every day before or after work. ate a ton of channel cats out of there too.

Ditto! I used to pride myself on catching both numbers and big bass at Choke. I’m kind of frustrated.
