I wanted your opinion on installing Lowrance Elite 7xhdi on a Kayak.

Is this a good option or do you have a better suggestion?

Thank you in advance.

Thank you,
Shawn Smith

The Elite if its the non touch one they were good units, The X means no mapping. Which from my perspective in a Kayak where you don't have the option off running around to look for fish or structure a map would be quite handy to minimize your time and rowing. If your just looking for depth and downscan go for it. Just make sure you have the latest software update in those as their was some software issues for a while till they finally got it fixed then all good.

Do you suggest a different unit and if so what do you recommend?

Thank you,

If you want a touch screen and the ability down the road to add Active Target or Live Sonar I would look at the Lowrance Elite FS 7 or 9" Comes with Active Image 3-1 transducer for Sonar, Downscan and Side Image Has fantastic CMap Contours Plus Mapping with Depth shading for Identifying a specific fish catching depth and its a very good low amp draw for the battery..

Check it out

If you can find a nice used or left over elite TI or TI2 with total scan transducer. that would be just as good as the FS and cheaper. The main big advantage the FS has is an Ethernet port. But if you are going to use it solely on the kayak a TI or TI2. Would be fine. If you didn’t want side scan just use the HDI transducer rather than the totalscan. If getting in the way is not a issue consider a 9 inch screen.I use a 9 HDs gen3 on my kayak because I also use it on my boat and have etherneted to my other units. Plus with a split screen it’s nice to have the larger screen. But for kayak only you don’t need the Ethernet capabilities consider the TI or TI2 like I stated before.

Thank you
I agree, bigger screen will be better for both.
