I've spent a lot of time in N Georgia since 2013. After having lived for a few years in Colorado, the trout fishing in N Georgia is mediocre at best.

Due to heavy pressure, none of the fishing in N Georgia is easy for new comers. It all has a steep learning curve. Starting in Texas, I certainly would not drive past Louisiana to go fishing in Georgia.

If heading east from Texas for trout, don't think I could make it past north Arkansas or Tennessee.

Funny you say that, maybe it is because that is how I grew up fishing, in Georgia. I could go to any lake or river in GA and catch fish left and right. I come to Texas and can't figure out their pattern to save my life. I am doing good with the crappie on Canyon and that lake east of Austin, bass are working me good. I have always been able to figure out bass in GA. I am going to go try Choke Canyon sometime next week. Going to do my usual routine to locate their behavior and hope I can catch some.

Choke should be great right now, just be careful navigating the minefield of wood. Chatterbait, squarebill, and jig should be great. It fishes similar to Oconee (minus the grass) or Seminole depending which part of GA you fished.

You certainly have to avoid the food stamp fisheries here in North Georgia. If you do some good scouting there are certainly places that have good trout. While our trout don't get selective in what they eat do to the lack of consistent hatches, Georgia has excellent water to learn how to fly fish. The tighter canopy and shoreline cover certainly help to refine casting and presentation.

Most of our Texas visitors are also here on business or to visit family. A twelve hour road trip to our neck of the woods vs the trip to Colorado may only be worth it if you want to chase Brookies in their native range.

Arkansas certainly has some great water. The trout fishing in Tennessee would actually be further from Texas than the North GA Trout
