I live in San Antonio and I was planning on heading to Choke Canyon next week. Now All I hear is how bad the water level is and people not locating bass. Lakes all around me except Canyon can't seem to hold a steady water level. How do you all fish out here? The conditions are crazy. If you lived in San Antonio and wanted to go bass fishing within a hour, where would you go right now? I may just go put some more crappie in the freeze.

You must be new to Texas, Choke is never full and the current water level is normal. There are a few hazards, but you’ll only hit them once and learn where not to run. If you hate fighting Hydrilla while fishing, don’t come here.
Canyon is always a challenge, actually fishes a little better this time of year though.
Braunig is always full, I’ve never fished it though.

Thank you, I have been here for almost a year. I am active duty so soon as I really get the hang of an area, I move to a different one. I fished Lake Seminole a lot in Georgia/Florida. It is mostly Hydrilla. I may give Choke a shot, any tips on what side of the lake to focus on. Does the low water effect the topside of the lake that looks ideal for bass fishing this time of year?

You don’t want tips from me, I haven’t done well there since the hydrilla took over. It completely baffles me how to find the bigger fish in it.

You might have to broaden your search for a bass lake to about 2 hrs. plus drive from S.A. in either direction. Your best chance is hire a guide, and I would start with Falcon which is down the road from Choke on the border. You also have Amistad directly west of S.A. again on the border. Go east to lakes Fayette County, Bastrop, or north to LBJ and Lake Buchanon, and you can always catch something if you head down to the coast and use your bass gear to catch saltwater species. You can fish Calaveras and Braunig lakes just to the S.E. outside the city limits, which the bass fishing is tough, but you can catch freshwater transplanted Red Fish, and Blue and Channel catfish, but go during the week to somewhat avoid the weekend crowd. The fishing near and around S.A. several years ago used to be great, but has deteriorated over the years from drought, old dams that gave way, but mainly from just over fishing from the massive growth of the city over the recent years. Drive a little further, hire a guide, but if you find a good spot, keep it to yourself if you can!......Good Luck and ! I'm not affiliated with any guides, but check out the bass porn on this link! https://texasfishingforum.com/forum...7159/18/lake-falcon-guide-service-report

Roscoe...Some other lakes you may want to explore are the ones in the Austin area. The highland lakes include lake Buchanan, lake LBJ, lake Marble Falls, Lake Travis & Lake Austin. Another lake on the east side of Austin is Walter E. Long (Decker Lake). There are also some small lakes around Boerne. Good Luck...

There is also Coleto Creek around Victoria. BTW - "people are always not locating bass."

guadalupe river, either below canyon or on down by gonzales. below canyon you can chase guadalupe bass as well as trout, gonzales area used to have some great bass holes on the river and the occasional cat on a lure.

I do not live in SA but I would fish Choke, Falcon, and Amistad; in this order. Regardless of the water condition and weather; fish and learn any body of water. I live in Houston and fish both fresh and saltwater, and both will work your skills. For the days that I do not catch fish; I take notes for the next trip. Also, do not be afraid to travel.
As Texans, we are blessed with so many wonderful waterways.

Keep in mind that Dunlap, Placid, and one of the sections near Gonzales had their damns breakdown and have low water with no access.

In the Gonzales area, the only access is below the Lake Wood dam and Gonzales Independence Park. There is no public access at the failed dam at Lake Gonzales. The paddling trail that starts at Lake Wood Dam, is an all day trip to the take out at Gonzales. No time for fishing. ALL the property on both sides of the river is private property. There is no public access above the failed Lake Wood Dam.

If you want to fish the Hill County your best bet is to get a kayak and fish the Guadalupe, Llano and San Marcos rivers. You can find lots of low water crossings and enjoy catching a variety of fish. Not necessarily anything big, but on ultralight tackle it's a lot of fun. The white bass run should start soon. Lots of rivers will be on fire.

Catfish Johns was on Lake Gonzales (H-4) The dam broke a couple of months ago and drained the lake. Lake Gonzales and Lake Wood are gone forever.
