Went back up to Whitney today to try and redeem myself from last Saturdays trip (only got two seventeen inch striper that day. Tried dead stick, swimbait, slabs, troll) this time, I armed myself with live minnows for the hopes of a more productive day. Launched at McGowan around 0730 and the fog was thick! I wanted to fish around bear creek but there was no safe way to get there fast so I opted to troll the umbrella rigs at 3mph the whole way there. It took about an hour but I got there and also landed a 19 inch striper to boot! Off to a better day already with one fish in the bag
I got to a spot where I metered a bunch of fish and threw minnows, slabs, dead stick flukes, swimbaits all for nada! Around ten the fog finally lifted and I was off chasing down bird piles. The bird activity was impressive today but no matter how slow I crept up to them the birds (and fish) would sink out as I got close enough to cast. I would be lucky to pull a single fish off the school before they jet. Finally found a school that wanted to hang and caught another half dozen there or so before I called it a day around 1pm. Final count is 14 striper all 17-20 inches, released all but one. Oh, and a catfish I caught on a minnow. They did not want minnows today at all.i threw minnows into giant schools of boiling fish for nothing. Switched back to the A rig and even got a double on it. That's a first for me
A whole lotta fun and can't think of a better way to spend a Wednesday. Thanks to y'all for the tips!!
