I went home for lunch yesterday and when it was time to go back to work my truck wouldn't start. $350 and several hours of labor later and the new in-tank fuel pump solved the problem. This is not a job I recommend doing with 1/2 a tank of gas unless you are going to remove the bed instead of the tank.
I'm sore this morning!

bed removal is the quickest, easiest... short of just loosening the bolts on one side, and removing the other,- then use the jack to pop up one side of the bed.... lol.

My Dad had a 98 S-10 that went through fuel pumps every couple years. He finally cut a small section out of the bed over the fuel pump and hinged it back in. Made changing the pump a snap!

I used to have an 88 full sized Blazer that ate fuel pumps periodically. After a trip to Padre Island one summer I was amazed at my fuel mileage. I couldn't figure it out. When I got home I still had 1/4 of a tank. I figured I had gotten close to 18 MPG in a truck that never got better than 14 in it's life.
The next morning I could not get it started. I had it towed to my mechanic and when he tested the fuel pressure it was 0. We both assumed it was the fuel pump.
You cannot take the bed off of a Blazer and to even get to the tank you have to remove the receiver, rear bumper, then the skid plate. Then you can drop the tank.
Anyway, after about 4 hours the mechanic got the tank off only to discover that the problem wasn't the fuel pump. It was my gas gauge. The tank was bone dry.
It took him 3 hours more to reassemble everything. He cut me a break on his normal shop rate of $45/hour but with the tow charge it still cost me $300.
I hope I never do that again!

Even though it sucks, I would rather take the tank off a blazer than a truck any day. But if its a truck, yeah, like everybody says just take the bed off. You be glad you did! BTW, just wondering here, why did you have to take the rear bumper and receiver hitch off the blazer? I know I had to drop many a tank just to get to the receiver bolts. But never drop the receiver to get the tank. But i'm just wondering.

I had to remove the bumper and receiver because they bolted on top of the skid plate.

GM won't admit to the problem, but if you consistently run your tank below 1/8 you will eventually burn up your fuel pump. The gas is actually used to cool the fuel pump, so running close to empty will cost you in the long run.
I have a 91 Z71. I never run it lower than a 1/4 tank.
