I just tell them how good it is to hear from them and then ask them for money before they ask me.

Family or not I will normally lend no more than I am willing to give whether $20, 50, or a hundred. I explain that it is a loan and never ask for more until that amount is repaid. More is not loaned until the time has expired from initial loan and repayment.
Works damn good.

No one in my family of the same last name would ask unless they really needed the money. I would help them financially as much as possible. Repaid would be no worry because I know they would repay it.

I have an aunt who has some sort of learning disability. Maybe just really low IQ (and I'm not saying that to be mean) she occasionally asks, because she's got another internet boyfriend from Africa who is a CEO, but needs a heart surgery he can't pay for. As soon as he gets the surgery he'll pay her back and she'll pay me back. Seriously been through this a half dozen times. She can't be convinced its a scam. Sad really.
Anyway, I'm happy to help in a variety of ways, but sending her money is not one of them.

A few years ago one of my Brother-in-law & Sister-in-law came to us, asking to borrow $500. They didn’t give a reason they needed the money, but we let them borrow it anyway. A week later they showed up at our house driving a brand new car. We’ve never seen that money and have never let them borrow money again.

My brother. Around the first of every month he calls and tells me how much I owe him for my half of paying Mom's expenses that SS doesn't cover.

I've cut off most of my family. I talk to my oldest and youngest sisters, and my son. The rest can drop dead as far as I'm concerned
