Honestly, it really depends upon a couple of factors:
1. Distance from your house. I will only drive a max of about 30 min to catch trout
2. How many fish they stock= more fish equals more opportunity to catch fish and the longer fish will be around after they stock. Once they stock, the anglers, bass, catfish and eventually cormorants will eat their fair share, especially the cormorants
3. Which hatchery- some fish seem to be bigger than others
4. Time of year- the later in the year the better! The fish have more time to grow so fish stocked in February are usually bigger than the ones in November

I hope this helps!

Just about all of the trout that are stocked by TPW usually die off by mid spring. Catch them while you can during the stocking periods. thumb

Just looked up Amarillo and they are putting a couple of thousand in a place they haven't put them before. Looks like I'm gonna have to try a new spot. I picked up 4 jars of Fire Balls when I was in CO so I'm ready to go!

Thompson Park. Last year they stocked MedPark South and Theo Lake in Caprock Canyon. This year they are putting 3000 in Thompson Park too.

I'd like to share my favorite method for catching trout on powerbait. I have limited out in under 15 minutes many times with this. I've also had days where the trout wouldn't touch it.
It starts with a number 6 hook, 6# test line and one large pea-sized split shot 2 1/2 to 3 feet up the line. I use the orange colored paste mostly. It has to float. the whole purpose is to float the hook above the weeds. Pinch off a bit and roll into a ball. You want a ball of paste just big enough to cover the hook.
Darn near anything will catch hungry hatch raised trout.
I've had action so fast I'm getting a bite on the rod I just put down while trying to bait up the second. On slow days I'll use an ulta light spinning rod with a small chrome spoon as the second rod.
These trout have a small mouth you can't stick your thumb in so bait acordingly.
Roll'em in flour and fry up in butter....so good!

I see you are a fan of the mice tails as well. Are you heading to the South Lakes Park Pond this Wednesday? I'll be out there with my kids.

@NTX Outdoors - yes I plan to be. Watch for the guy with a wagon, 6+ folding chairs, and ~10+ poles (how many are in use will depend on how many kids are fishing at any point in time).

Couple of weeks. Once the cormorant show up they finish them off quickly…

Thanks, I don’t know why I assumed they died off a couple of days after a stocking. Good to know.

To kick-off the Texas Trout Stocking Season, we posted a video that describes places we like to fish for the 2021-2022 Season. Specifically, three counties near the DFW Metroplex and then the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center.

Do check out the video, and do let us know how this Season is going for you... "are you catching a trout or two, or more?"
