Watching the Elite Redfsih Cup out of Port Aransas. When they have one hooked on a bait aster they sit there and pull a couple of foot of line off the reel. Never have understood that. I could see it once to determine if the drag is set right but they do it repeatedly.

Why?

I have caught a ton of Redfish over they years. They don’t call them rubber lips for nothing. You hook one you usually catch them. Just have to be sure they don’t break you off on light line.

They are making sure that the line has not cut down into the spool; which would cause problems with the drag system and a break off.

To me it sounds like they need to set their drag a little lighter than they have it set. I don't understand doing what you describe either same as back reeling on a spinning reel. Just simply set your drag properly.
