Last say my biological father when I was 7. Went into the witness protection program shortly after. 17 years later died of lead poisoning.

My dad was tough and ran his house as a totalitarian state with him as dictator. He was hard on me at times because he had high expectations for me. One time in my years at home I made the mistake of saying I didn't think something was fair. He told me in no uncertain terms that he couldn't care less what I thought was fair and that when I had my own home I could run it the way I wanted.
Funny thing is that after all that when I graduated from high school and permanently moved away, first to college and then with my wife, a light switch flipped and he instantly started treating me like a man and his equal. He would give me advice on rare occasions, but he didn't try to run my life in any way. We had a great relationship until he died. He was as brilliant a man as I ever knew, genius IQ in fact, a World War II veteran who saw some of the toughest combat in the Pacific, an amateur heavyweight boxer, and a tremendously interesting, well read, and funny guy who didn't take any more guff as a crippled old man than he did when he was young.
I am more and more like him every day.

my dad was born to teenagers ( his mom just turned 15 and his dad was 18 ) ---and born in the depression . He was never given anything and he expected me to be the same . He worked me hard , even when I was 11 or 12 , we were working on rebuilding motors , fixing anything that needed to be fixed . As a kid , I hated it , as an adult with kids and grandkids --- I am glad he was that way . His dad was even tougher , they would send me out to their farm in Iowa for summers and work me from sunrise to sunset ---everyday except sundays . Farm work is hard for 12 year olds . The best advice I was ever given as a new dad ---NEVER TRY TO BE YOUR KIDS FRIEND , ONLY THEIR PARENT . The best advice I have given --- never spoil a child with stuff , make them earn everything and you'll have adults that can help themselves .

That is the word my sisters and my mom use to describe him. I call him a waste of human flesh. I haven't spoken to him in 23 years and don't have any desire to. I'll go to his funeral just to be certain he's dead. He is the prime example that evil does in fact walk the Earth in human form.

My dad was the coolest. My mom handed down the beatings.

No, mine was great! I am sorry so many of you had to deal those issues. I count my blessings for having a wonderful Mom and Dad growing up!

I have an amazing Dad. He did the best he could to raise me when my Mom left when I was 7. She no longer wanted the burden of being a wife or a Mom. Actually told me that with a straight face. We are friends now, but no relationship as a Mom and Son. My Dad gets 100% of the credit for my upbringing.

Yes.. complete azzhole. He was like most dads of that generation, hard working, quick with the hand slow with showing love. My brother and I figured out early how to stay on his good side. Make good grades, work to make money, and not hang out around the house when he was home.

My Dad was uber tough on me. He too was a kid during the depression and had to scramble to help his parents. There were times I hated the man, but now that I am older, I am thankful that he was so hard on me. I can look back and see where I could fairly easily gotten my self on the path to jail. He went easy on my brother and the difference is very visible, almost tangible, today. RIP Dad.

My Dad was good to us...yes a little tough but we needed it. Especially my younger brother, what a F-up. Whenever we complained about chores (shoveling driveway/sidewalk , yard work or whatever) He would say "That's why I had sons, to do all the work" He usually followed that with "Besides I feed you and give you a roof over your head. Now get back to work."
When we graduated high school he told us, college, military or out of the house. I went to college. Brother went to college, flunked out then into the Air Force. Air Force straightened his butt out. He complete his undergraduate degree and his Masters under the G.I. Bill.
Dad was pretty tough on us, but fair. I miss him and my Mom everyday.

Whether you think you can or you can't, you are probably right.
