Do any of you guys have preferred lakes to fish when it gets windy? Looks like we’re due for some pretty stiff wind out of the south this weekend in Central TX. Was thinking that Belton may be a good option because of how the upper arm appears protected.
I’m in a 17’ Mako skiff with no spot lock so windy days are flat out challenging.

on any windy day if you get into a protected area so will nearly everyone else so expect lot's of company.
better would be to invest in some type of anchor so you can stop on the windy bank and catch the fish that have followed the bait there.

Not trying to be a smart #$% but if it's really windy then its a cold one on the deck and something good on TV!

Even on a small lake, it can get hairy. Last month me and my son were out and it kept getting worse by the hour. When the waves start coming over the bow, it's getting bad. We found some protected spots, but I don't get out in the real bad water with anyone in the boat. Just not worth it to take a chance on safety. Finally threw up my hands and went to the house. There are days when you can do some sortting, or tidying up in the boat in the luxury of the garage. Wind report here in dfw says gusts to possible 48mph on thursday. This is when it's time to either knock out some chores, or a great time to suprise the wife with a movie date. Just don't bring up the wind.. Me and a buddy got surprised in a cove when a front blew in with 35mph+ winds. when it was getting late we tied down everything and went into it to go to the cove where the ramp was. Was only about 1/4 mile upwind but it was rough. He has a 20ft champion, i have a 18'6" which is a night and day difference. He went easy, and bow up through it with ease. I finessed it thru the waves, and skirted the edges that were more protected. Had a butt pucker moment , pulled the kill switch somehow. Knowing my boat very well, it was a 5 second regroup. But if I was a not as experienced with the boat or a new boater I would have lost the boat. Video taken forward, and backwards. You can get a feel for the waves halfway thru the video when it changes to the rear facing camera at the 4 minute mark. I would love to do a boat test in one of the bigger 20-21ft new boats out on a lake on a windy day. I will never sell my boat, im in love with the old girl. Not to mention boats are stupid expensive these days. I put more money into the boat this year with an (Ultrex, helix 12, and the 360) than the boat is actually worth. The website for a good wind forecast "wind alert". This is for the DFW area, but you can search for your location. WindReport LinkHere is thursdays wind report ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2021/10/full-1116-115771-screenshot_20211027_033456_samsung_internet.jpg) If you watch carefully, at the 20 sec mark (over my right shoulder) you can see the 20ft champion just putting nose up right thru the waves. My boat is a 89 champion with the original 88 merc black max 175. I have been is rough water, but never have I gone into it the wind in rollers. Lake is Grapevine and a narrow lake. Wind happened to be blowing down the lake from the West, which is not very common. This lake is easy peasy in 25mph (north or south winds). Sometimes it's just better to stay at home, i failed to keep track on the weather and a front blew in. I couldn't imagine a big lake in big wind.. Prosise

You absolutely have to learn to “tack” in a smaller boat in big winds. I started out in a 15’3” boat with a 50 on it, had no second thoughts about fishing in 25+ mph winds. Lakes with boat lanes that won’t allow you to tack are a different story…. I’d avoid those in big winds.

Thanks for the website! I’ll definitely keep an eye on that. Agree, not worth being on the water when conditions deteriorate but you handled those waves like a champ. Ended up striking out on Lake Belton last weekend in high winds but was more due to me not being able to find the fish in shallow water than the weather conditions.
