They release the redfish all up and down the coast. There is no particular spot that they relase more fish at than others. There are no bad things about it. First its not very expensive for the whole summer, second if you catch a fish that could win you a boat and truck and are not entered you'll be sick for the rest of your life, thrid even if you don't win your entry fee contributes to a fish conservation associtation that has been aroound for years and there is nothing wrong with a donation, and finally you get a free subscription to the magazine Texas Fish and Game and they give you a 10 dollar gift card to academy.

My brother and a group of his friends enter the Star Tournament every year. The second or third year, one of the guy's caught a tagged redfish and won himself a Ford F-150 and a 22' Bluewave boat. Not bad for paying the entry fee every year. If you are going to fish along the coast sevral times/year, I would pay the entry fee just for the chance. You never know! Besides, the money goes to a good cause.
Good Luck!

Ditto to what these guys have said. I don't fish as much as I would like but would definitely be sick if I caught something that would win or was tagged. $25 to join CCA and $15 to enter the STAR is not much money, plus you get magazines and newsletters for joining. And, like they said, the $ goes to a good cause. http://www.ccatexas.org/ccatexas/Default.asp

My boss's Dad caught a tagged red last year and won the Truck, Boat and trailer rig. It could happen to YOU!
