My balances are getting very close to something I would be comfortable with. I have enough money in cash and a non-IRA brokerage account to cover anything that might come up in next 10 years. I am thinking about reducing my risk in the IRA accounts but still want to earn at least enough to cover inflation. I manage my own accounts. I am thinking about a mixture of money market, some high yield dividend stocks, and maybe an index fund. I might just go with 1/3 in each.

The money market allocation will certainly reduce volatility but will not come close to keeping up with inflation, at least at current rates. Might want to give some thought to REITs, BDCs and pipelines.

Jordan Belfort I take Quaaludes 10-15 times a day for my “back pain”, Adderall to stay focused, Xanax to take the edge off, pot to mellow me out, cocaine to wake me back up again, and morphine… Well, because it’s awesome.

I have 4000 shares of EPD. That gets me a $1800 dividend check every three months.

I’d investigate self directed investment platforms and robo advisors

I was wondering about VZ or T as a solid dividend stock. Both sold off recently and I don't know for sure but I think T said they were not going to raise dividends this year like they always have. VZ (Verizon) was a pick in a value investing newsletter I used to take. I believe both companies have high debt due to buying other companies. They are in telecommunications so I would think they should do well long term. I haven't looked into them though, but was just thinking about it due to the sell off.

Based on what management announced earlier this year, T is likely going to cut their dividend next year to bring yield down to 4-5% range.

Stay away from T but VZ is a good one. I would look at some good REITs and pipeline stocks that are consistent with their dividends. You might want to talk with a investment advisor for some real advice.

I have some EPD and also MMP. I may pick up some more. I has a fair amount of T but dumped it early this year. Tesla has done me well since I bought it. Wish I had grabbed more.

I have always managed my 401k at work. She comparing 5yr returns against those who used the Voya service no one I know had a higher % return. I have been able to catch some good market ups and downs by transferring balance to stable funds then transferring back during a down market.

To me the market is drastically over valued now. I think a major correction is coming soon. I have a pretty good amount in stable funds. Yesterday I was going to transfer more and just didn’t. Hopefully I won’t regret that.

Pretty easy to have great gain between early 2020 and now. If I had 3 more years like the last year I could retire early. Right now it’s 5 yrs, maybe 6. Should be well set. Wife also has a 401K and I have a company pension that’s pretty nice as well.

Figure there will be one nasty down cycle between now and retirement. I will bet it starts soon, no later than Q1 2022.

My wife works for Morgan Stanley. Once I retire I will move all the balance to them and her boss will manage our accounts. Got to be in the company 401K to get the 6% dollar for dollar match,

41 years at the same job has been pretty good in terms of retirement.

^^^Some good info there and sounds like you are setting yourself up very well for retirement. That said most will not come out ahead managing their 401k and trying to outguess the market. I have been in my 401k since 1991 and I chose to pick a target date fund and leave it alone. I was very close to the accountant who oversaw our plan. He tracked everyone’s percentage over the years. We had some very smart, very educated upper managers who moved theirs around thru the years and he told me percentage wise I came out on top. Certainly not $$$ these folks made bank compared to me but percentage wise it worked out over the long term not to try and outguess the market. I am only saying this because most will come out on top picking the right fund and leaving it alone…unless they have a very polished crystal ball.

I have been in it for about the same amount of time since Sept 1990 when the company I worked for was brought out. A lot of what I did was to leave it alone in funds and let time work. Some of those funds have seen very nice returns. Most of the movement was in and out out company stock. Anytime I got a ~30% gain I took it by transferring to stable funds. Right now I think the company stock is at top value so I have little. I should have transferred a bunch to company stock in early 2020. Missed a very nice opportunity there. Also when the market got stupid high I transferred to stable funds. Waited and got back in on a low. Never was perfect on timing but was pretty good. Not a ton of back and forth.

I would say my ratio of good moves to poor moves has been about 5:1.

Also I got advice from my wife’s boss at times. He suggested some rebalance and I figured why try to out do the guy that does it everyday for a nice living and has a lot of happy clients.
