Highest elevation in Texas at 8750 ft. Any of ya’ll hiked it? Wife and I are fixing to tackle it this Friday. We’ve hiked Big Bend NP extensively (South Rim, Lost Mine, OML etc) but wanted a change of scenery for this hike.

I’ve climbed it 3 times back in the 1990’s. Solo the first time and camped on top. 2nd time with my daughter, and 3rd time with my son and daughter when they were kids. Absolutely beautiful views so take a lot of pictures. It took us 4.5 hrs up and 3.5 down on the average. Take a gallon of water each. It gets pretty windy near the top.
Also the Mckittrick Canyon hike is one of the most beautiful in Texas. The trees turn brilliant colors usually starting the middle of October. It’s an easy day hike and starts in the vicinity of the Guad. Peak trail head.

Done it twice now. Great hike when the weather cools off. Take plenty of water.

wingnut, on your Mckittrick Canyon hike did you get to see any of the rainbow trout? Supposed to be the only wild reproducing trout population in Texas. Quite an interesting story behind how they came to be there.

I'm the only one in my family that wants to visit that park and hike that mountain.
Guess I'm going to have to wait till the kids move out before I leave wifey at home and just go my self.

We'd just been tossing around the idea of a primitive Big Bend camping trip.

Never heard of it...had to look it up. Sounds like a great adventure for most. What I don't get is, why do they have signs in brail? Looking at some of these cliffs, it would seem a great place to take blind old aunt Myrtle. I can almost hear it now, tick tick tick tick from her cane and then all of a sudden...silence. Myrtle???

Jon, I remember seeing a few small trout darting about, but it’s been a long time.

If memory serves correctly, it is an approximate 3,000 foot gain which is rich for Texas hikes.
Shoot many or our hikes in the Rockies don't have that much change in altitude.
Still a source of pride to say you hiked to the highest point in Texas.
We did Guadalupe Peak too but McKittrick is actually more scenic.
Hope it wasn't as hot there as it has been in Central Texas this weekend.
