Im sure this has been talked about before. If it has I apologize, but what is the scoop on Johnson outboard motors. The boat I am looking at has a 130 hp Johnson. I had a boat in the late 70s that had a Johnson and it was a good motor back then. I see mostly Mercurys and Yamahas now. Is there any glaring problems with them or is a Ford vs Chevy type argument.

The way I've understood it is that Johnson/Evinrude took a major quality control/PR hit when parent OMC came out with the FFI motors starting in '97 (I think). Folks say that pretty well doomed OMC. Bombardier owns them now, and they look like they're doing good things thus far.

It's my understanding that the ETec motors are fine.

What vintage are you looking at?

Two problems exist in the 120-130-140's. 1st is the ignition switch in 96 had a recall. If the unit used a left-over 96 switch it can cut off or semi-kill the engine while your underway. The 2nd is the thermostats are kind of ucky. They love to clog with debre (known as the salt shaker type) and overheat the engine or the ignition is thermostatly controlled and does weird things like, not wanting to iddle properly. Other than that. They are good units........

I have an 01 Johnson 90. Not the quietest, not smokeless, not the most fuel efficient but has never had a hiccup and is slightly over advertised power rating.

I've got 2 91' 115's aside from sticky carbs no issues. Sticky carbs are due to too much time on the drive way. blush

Thanks for the feed back. I am looking at a boat Sunday and just wanted to learn alittle bit before I looked. The boat I just sold had a inboard. I will have to ajust to the outboard.

my uncle has a 18 foot aluminum lowe.
he has a 97 115 Johnson on it.
the motor is in great shape.
it is still running strong.
it will push his boat about 60 MPH.
it has not had any work on it and is still running fine.

I've had a lot better luck with OMC (Evinrude and Johnson) over the past years than I'm having with my 3-month old Mercury right now.

I had a 150 Johnson for 12 years that was outstanding!
