So I was doing my thing, out float fishing for sunfish in a nearly dried up fishing hole. Six foot ultralight rod, closed face triggerspin reel, 4lb test flouro, a 1/80th ounce jig tipped with a single Gulp plastic wax worm.

Float went bloop and I gave it the same hookset I would give for any other sunfish. What ensued was a 6 minute series of reel in and drag out. Miraculously I pulled out a 3 lb 3 oz bass. For me that is a personal best.

This fish pulled me all over the pond, under every overhang, through every brush pile, through every bit of weeds there was. No idea how it didn't break my line.

Well done. Big bass often eat tiny things. You figured out the key!

I often called it "popcorn bass fishing". The idea being that even an elephant will eat one piece of popcorn.

Actually, it is a sunfish😀. Really nice catch though especially on UL tackle. I use a very similar rig off our dock and occasionally hook into a huge carp or catfish. They usually end up just wrapping around all the piling and break off.

Ahh you are correct! I meant that as it wasn't one of the fish in the lepomis genus. But yes still in the Centrarchidae "sunfish" family. Good call.

Sufix Advance. Pricey but can't argue with the results.

Remember that 3.3 lb bass. I'm pretty sure you are going to be addicted for the rest of your life and that's not a bad thing. Fishing is a great hobby and I'm sure it has kept me out of trouble. Keep at it. You might want to go up to 8 lb test if you want a 5 lber.
