Chris so when we were in Louisiana catching bullreds probably about 75% of the reds were inhaling the bait and getting deep hooked. I was using the same rig as I used in Galveston the last time I went there for bulls and we never had a deep hooked fish there, a carolina rig. I tried using different hooks and everything was deep hooking. I used team catfish 8/0 double action, WS 8/0 triplethreat, Gama 8/0 inline and offset, and 10/0 and 12/0 mustad circles. Whats the deal?

It was the bite Matt! We deep hooked half our Bull Reds as well with 8/0 hooks. They were inhaling the croakers and then just kind of sitting there not running. The rod tip would bounce a little and the fish was on. We had to cut numerous leaders and leave the hooks in the fish. I rarely get a deep hooked fish when catching big catfish but when I do it usually happens multiple times on the same trip. Some days they hammer the bait at speed like you hooked a jet ski going by and some days they just sneak up and inhale it without doing an injury bite. Generally the fish will all take the bait down in a similar fashion for that particular day. You’ll hear me hollar on my videos “I got a side runner!” Those fish are usually big and hit the bait hard and fast! My favorite kind of bite but if your not paying close attention on those days then side runners will cross all your lines and leave you with a huge tangled mess! I wish they were all fast moving side runners!
