I’m just starting out making soft plastic lures. Bought some molds from FusionX and did some pours today using a microwave to melt the plastisol. I’m not crazy about the process and am wondering if there is a more controlled way to melt the plastisol using a thermostatic controlled device where you can set the temp. Does anyone have any recommendations ?

If you have climate control in your work environment, then look into something with thermostatic control.

In Texas, May to Mid November in the garage, microwaves are nice because they don’t radiate any heat.

You could hedge, and get something mild that keeps the injector and molds warm.
Warm injector and warm molds definitely make your life easier.

Do not rush.
When using plastisol alone, heat in microwave in 1 minute intervals at least twice and then 45 sec, followed by 30 sec. until ready.

Stirring lightly after each step. If using glitter , place glitter in last 2 intervals.

I use recycled soft plastics and add about 1 quarter cup of plastisol and then heat 1 step at 1 min 30 sec, then 45 sec. 40 sec, 35 sec and maybe 2 30 sec steps

The above is using soft plastisol in a 700 watt microwave.

I spray a light coat of canola or vegetable spray about every 5 injections.

Caution, when using recycled soft plastics be careful not to scorch, the recycled are of many different grades of plastisol.

I suggest never to try to re-heat elasticized soft plastics.

The above is using a 1 cup anchor- microwaveable measuring cup.

Hope this helps/ Let me know, please.

TGL,

Outside of using a conventional microwave the only other affordable manner that I have seen used is a presto pot. The only draw back with this is that usually for it to be effective you must be using a 1/2 to full gallon of plastisol in order for the injector to pick it up. There are injection systems out there if you have the money, but as with the presto pot there are designed to be used with greater quantities of plastisol. Hope this helps.

There are some good videos on you tube to help you get started.

Safety Tip:
Do not wear shorts and flip flops when pouring hot plastic. Spill Hot Plastisol on yourself and it's instant 3rd degree burns! Be in a well ventilated area. Do not breath the smoke...It all smokes when it gets hot.
Fun hobby, just be safe.
You can PM me if you need any advice, I have been doing it since 1982.

If you have not yet found him on You Tube you have got to watch Worldsworstfishing !! His is a wizard and have many many videos. He has a couple of beginner videos. I use a microwave exclusively unless I am running a big run for injection. Then I use a presto pot from Wal-Mart $25

Thanks for all the great tips everyone ! Using Psalty’s tips I poured a few senkos and Ned rig baits. They came out fantastic. I used fusionx cubes to start out. Will venture in to recycling when I get my skills fine tuned
