 '79 evinrude runs backwards

'79 evinrude start good runs good, but runs forward in reverse and reverse in forward. any ideas????

Is this something new? What have you done to it different? Or did you just buy it and it ran like this?

Have hit this, some OMC lower units are made to shift backwards for the type of control. Had a lower from a early 70`s 65 HP 3 cylinder that I installed on a 80`s 70 HP 3 cylinder that shifted backwards. You will have to find correct lower unit for your outboard. Good Luck

battery cables won't make it do this.
what horsepower or model#?
did you just finish rebuilding the gearcase?
could be a left hand prop on a right hand engine, or vice versa?

Could be a reverse gearcase...If it is you can get a left or right hand prop to fix this problem...

Also if you bought a new prop it could be reversed. I bought a new prop and it was left hand turn instead of right hand. Had to exchange it for the right prop.

You've got a counter-rotating lower unit. It was probably one of a pair that was taken off a boat with twin outboards.
Get yourself a left hand prop and you're in business.

Could the shift cables be hooked up backwards?????
I don't know if this is even possible but a though.

Just mount the controls on the left side of the boat, problem solved.

I'd just put the prop on backwards.
