Want to get my first AR. I have shotguns and handguns, no rifles yet.

I went and messed around with some at some gun shops. I liked he M&P15 and the Colt M4 (especially the Colt.) Just wondering what y’all think of these. They’re in the price range I’m willing to spend. I’ve shot an M&P15 before

I’m knowledgeable on guns but not TOO familiar with AR’s. People have told me I should just build one but I’m not very knowledgeable on that process.

I’ve wanted one for a while just never have “pulled the trigger.” I figured right now is no better time, considering the only ammo plentiful on the shelves is 5.56

Just looking for any guidance on where to start and what to do!

Here are links to the exact ones I’ve been eyeing

Just assemble your own. If you buy a complete rifle, you'll end up wanting to switch out a bunch of parts. Get something with an MLOK or quad pic rail handguard. Those plastic handguards on the guns you posted are worthless.

Your price point appears to be a budget build. Buy a bunch of Aero parts, and call it good. If you're gonna splurge on something, get a Geissele trigger.

Here's a complete build for you for roughly the same price as that colt you posted, and this build would be much nicer:

LaRue tactical has an ultimate upper kit and lower you can buy and put together yourself. Get your hands “dirty” with it, you’ll appreciate it more.

The M&Ps and Colts are great guns. I'd also recommend Windham Weaponry. There's a cool story behind that company. They are based in Maine and used to be Bushmaster before being bought out. The company that bought them moved the company to a different state, putting a lot of people out of work. When the original owner's non-compete clause expired, he reopened the company under the Windham Weaponry name and rehired a lot of the former workers. I own one of their rifles and it's a great gun.

Instead of the $130 dollar charging handle and $100 in flip up sights you could do a <$30 charging handle and go with a $200-$300 optic. Guess it ultimately depends what your use for it will be though.

That was my thought... and the route I went. Cut costs on some places and out a holosun red dot with a 3x magnifier.

When I was getting into the AR scene a few years ago, I had Bought This thinking it was what I wanted. Right after that, I spent 3 times as much building that rifle into what I really wanted. Have to agree here, buy the parts and build what you really want and it will also help you understand the maintenance and build process of your flea flicker. Now that mine is built and Cerakoted like I want, I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

if you just want one to shoot/hunt pigs etc. check out these, I have put together 3 from here and they are good quality.

I would suggest looking at this as well. I built 2 of these, only thing I changed was the trigger. ammo for the 7.62x39 is a lot cheaper and more available.

7.62x39, 16" Parkerized Heavy Barrel, 1:10 Twist, Carbine Length Gas System, 15" MLOK Rail|Side Charging Rifle(Gen 2/Engraved Lower/No Magazine)

Okay, so bear with me for this newbie question

What exactly would you want to change on the rifle and why? The way I look at it from a newbie standpoint, whether you buy one built or build it yourself, you get the same end result.. a rifle that shoots. For example say I got an M&P. I don’t see why I would want to change anything on it for parts that do the exact same thing.

I 100% understand adding nice sights on it. But as far the basic functionality of the rifle, I haven’t figured out why one would want to change anything

Educate me. Again, this is from someone that doesn’t know [censored] about AR’s. I haven’t understood why people change out parts yet for the same end result of a stock rifle

If I went the DIY route, are the good YouTube videos on how to assemble it?

And by the way to answer some questions.. I’ll be getting one to have fun at the range with and on VERY RARE occasion use it to hunt pigs/deer. I’m a waterfowl hunter primarily

a little over 400.00 for an upper/lower complete gun ready to shoot.

great trigger upgrade (on sale for 139.00) and super simple to install, well worth the extra. I have these in all but one rifle, the one is a geissele 2 stage in my windham.

I wonder if it would be good for me to maybe start off and buy a ready to go AR like the M&P, and then once I understand them a little more then build my own?
