My kids got me a Abu Garcia Vengence 7’6” heavy action rod for my birthday. Never had a heavy action rod before. Always used medium heavy. What is it good for and what gear ratio reel would be the best for it? Thanks.

It’ll be good for flipping around wood with heavier weights. With the moderate fast action you can use it for Alabama rigs as well as lighter punching(1oz). I’d pair it with a 7:1:1 or 8:1:1 with a good drag since you’ll likely be fishing it around thicker cover.

This.....
Other uses: 3/4 oz jig, Carolina Rig

I typically use Med Heavy but for big fish in tight cover or grass I switch to a Heavy. Hauling up a 5 lber with 20 lbs of salad requires some horsepower!

I use mine as a dedicated frog rod. I am not into jig fishing all that much. Heavy is the power, not the action. Even experienced fishermen have a tendency to say the same thing. Pretty sure I've heard professionals on youtube make the same mistake. So not trying to bash you. Just point out a common mistake made by many.
