When I was NATTc Memphis(Millington) in the mid 70’s I partied withNavy ATC guys going to C school. C school gave them a golden ticket with the FAA, my understanding. Dang those folks could party! No emojis cause offends some on here…LOL!

Keep looking forward. That’s why windshields are larger than rear view mirrors.

Here is what happened when I took the test. Some of this may have changed in the last 35 plus years since.
You take the test, get your scores and have to go through an interview and background check before you go to their 13 week school. If you pass you can accept a job.
It takes 7 years before you are fully trained and do not need a trainer supervising you constantly.
You are allowed to retire at 52 and mandatory at 55.

Like I said it may have changed.

It takes about 2 to 3 years to be fully trained. Covid has extended that time of course but generally 2 to 3 years at bigger facilities. Smaller tower times are quicker.

Retirement rules are at least 20 years at age 50 or 25 years at any age. Meaning if you gonna in at 22 you could retire at age 47. Mandatory requirement at age 56 and I actually agree with the maximum age to enter. Some could stay past 56 and still do a great job but alot would stay while their abilities decline.

I retired after 28 years of controlling and supervising.

I was 17yrs.old joined the Army in 1967 with a promise of attending Air Traffic school on an air base in Biloxi,MS (Kessler AFB) took my training
and did not receive orders for my next assignment, pretty much all troops had South East Asia as their next assignment, not sure if was a requirement
that all troops be at least 18yrs.old before making The Nam trip.I was sent to Ft.Rucker Alabama for helicopter maint. completed my training there but
was still 17 so I was sent to Ft.Sill,Ok for 8 wks of artillery training ,completed the training ,still about a month before I turned 18,so was sent to 4 weeks
of self propelled artillery,I no sooner completed training and received orders to be sent to Viet Nam as a artillery man ! flag assigned a mobile
105mm platoon and later to an 8in.company managed to get a pretty cushy job in fire direction ctr.,util my tour was up., pretty much gave up my dream
of controlling aircraft.
