I know the value of rain in central Texas, but good grief... I have to get out soon, else I will go stark raving mad. I don't mind getting wet, I just don't like getting dead (lightning). I actually like fishing in a good steady rain in the summertime, but these little fronts that keep coming through have bouts of thunder and lighning associated with them, so it's almost going to be a guarantee that, if I head out early this AM, I will encounter a bad situation. In the past, I would go anyhow and make the call from the ramp, but now I like to drive to Fayette, about 90 miles one way, and that's a good haul for a flip of the coin. There are some lakes around here I could hit, but when you know the bass are checking their watches wondering where you are, it's hard to let them down.
Oh well, maybe next week.

Hey K-M-D, since you are in R.R. just run on down to Bastrop and get on the schoolies around the dam. This should help to keep you from going...
Attitudes are contagious, is yours worth catching?

Since I am out here in Georgia now, They could use some of that stuff out here. These folks are in a serious drought, and 90 degrees feels like a 100 out here! Everything is dry as tinderwood.

Could be worse, 100+ days, lakes drying up, I'll take the rain over drought anyday. Don't worry though a month or two from now we will be saying when will it rain. We could use some of that heavy rain on our watersheds in west Texas though. White River needs it bad.

If last year wasn't so fresh in my mind, I would be crying right now. For now I just praise the Lord for all this rain.

The Hill Country got over 16" of rain since midnight. Travis is rising about 1'/hr, up 5' already today. and Georgetown is up almost 10' since midnight. Only 1 way in or out of Marble Falls 71W/281, this is insane, more rain on its way!!!

Just checked http://waterdata.usgs.gov/tx/nwis/current?type=lake . Travis is without any question rising VERY rapidly. From 2am this morning, till now (8am) Travis has risen almost six feet. Nutso... The water level in Lake Waco did almost the same thing last May, or maybe late April rose over five feet in one night. Lake Georgetown is up over 12 feet since about 1am this morning (8am now). All the lakes along the I-35 corridor are way, way up. Given that so many drain into the Brazos via one tributary or another keeping them near pool level is going to be a challenge without flooding Brazos County, and points south along the Brazos River. Lake Current Average Travis 687.75 671.44
From the City: Due to current and anticipated LCRA floodgate operations, the city of Austin is closing ALL of Lake Austin, Town Lake, and the Lower Colorado River below Longhorn Dam. Residents along these waterways should immediately secure all property and anticipate increasing water levels. Closures will be reassessed as gate operations change. San Gabriel is 30 feet over flood stages.

Lake Travis projected to rise to 695-697 elevation; four floodgates open at Mansfield Dam June 27, 2007, 11 a.m. LCRA projects Lake Travis to rise to an elevation of up to 695 to 697 feet above mean sea level (msl) by Thursday afternoon, as a result of torrential rains in the Hill Country overnight and this morning. Lake Travis is holding the floodwaters until they can be safely released downstream one of the main functions that the lake was designed to handle.
Lake Travis, already above elevation of 689 feet msl, could reach 691 feet msl by middle of the afternoon. At 11 a.m. LCRA opened a fourth floodgate at Mansfield Dam, which forms Lake Travis, to pass through runoff from overnight storms of up to 19 inches in some locations in the Hill Country.
The 695 to 697 range is based on rainfall that has already fallen. Additional rains in the Hill Country could cause Lake Travis to rise higher.
At 1 p.m. LCRA will open one floodgate at Buchanan Dam, which forms Lake Buchanan. Four floodgates are open at Wirtz Dam which forms Lake LBJ, while all 10 floodgates are open at Starcke Dam, which forms Lake Marble Falls. At Tom Miller Dam which forms Lake Austin, two floodgates are fully open and one floodgate is partially open.
The City of Austin has closed Lake Austin, Town Lake and the Colorado River downstream of Longhorn Dam to recreational activities.
The last time four gates were open at Mansfield Dam was during the Thanksgiving Flood of November 2004.
A 695 elevation would place Lake Travis 14 feet into its flood pool above the full elevation level of 681.
At an elevation range of 687 to 690, Lake Travis would affect houses that have been built deep in the lakes flood pool, such as in the Graveyard Point community.
LCRA has placed no wake buoys on the lake around Graveyard Point to minimize damage to affected houses from wakes.
Three Hill Country tributaries were at flood stage late this morning: the Llano River at Llano, the Pedernales River at Johnson City, and Sandy Creek near Kingsland.
Downstream of Austin, as a result of flood releases from the Highland Lakes, the Colorado River at Austin, Bastrop, Smithville, La Grange and Wharton is expected to rise above bank-full stage but remain below flood stage.
LCRA continues to monitor conditions and asks residents who live along Hill Country rivers and creeks to do the same. Residents who live along the lake, river or other tributaries should closely monitor weather conditions and be prepared to take any necessary precautions such as securing boat docks and other property that may be in the floodplain.
Drivers should not attempt to drive through water that is causing flooding at low-water crossings through the Central Texas area. Travelers are urged to follow the advice of the National Weather Service's campaign to warn people of the hazards of walking or driving through flood waters: Turn Around Don't Drown.
