Me and my dad will be heading out to the river legacy paddling trail this weekend to test out our new yaks and hopefully snag a few fish! id love to hear some tips on fishing this part of the river, and kayak fishing in general as this is my first setup. Not looking so much for big fish, as I'm using my ultralight set up, and I already reckon the fish will be much stronger than lake fish. we'll be heading about 4 miles upstream and back, so im not sure how much of the river we'll actually be seeing that's worth fishing. Probably one of my first times river fishing, and actual kayak fishing so please some tips on either of those categories!

Wear your PFD and hydrate. Good sun protection, too.

It’s been a while since I’ve fished the Trinity, but I’ve done well on brush hogs, spinnerbaits and slider worms. If you’re only bringing an ultralight setup, I’d fish slider worms.

If you see a creek coming into the river be sure to explore it. I think the river is still high. A small spinnerbait or beetle spin will catch about anything. Good luck.

We fish an inlet that dark water feeds into the river last year and caught 50 bass or so. Speed worms and craw

When I am not fishing I am thinking about fishing. And mostly what I should have done differently my last trip!

If i am not mistaken they cut flow yesterday (at least on the elm fork) Water is still flowing pretty good. Look for pockets and if you want to fish a fallen tree in the current paddle up behind it. If you tump in a submerged tree from the front the current will mash you into the limbs and if it is still 3.5 mph like it was last I went out you would not be able to get out.

I always look for tributaries and paddle back in them. Get out of the main flow. It is hard to fish with the yak moving and the current on the line. Lots of hangups if you are cover fishing.

I use a 2 or 3" keitech swim bait on a light head and just keep casting and winding. If you find one bass, there will probably be more.

danial S: Check the warnings before eating fish out of the river. Some parts of the Trinity have "Do Not Consume Fish" orders. But, catch 'em up and have fun! IslandJim
