After all of the above fails and use my lure knocker which is tied to an anchor rein and has 28' of line. If windy I always situate the boat down wind from the stick up and if in less that 10' I put my 12' talons down. I rarely loose a crankbait with this method.
I recently threw the plug knocker into a tree and actually caught a hook in the chain and was able to pull it down. Not on the first try however.

I sink chain link fence and old cast nets in key fishing areas. Pull them up once a month and walla ... Free lures! You would not believe the collection of lures I have found on my dock in the last 20 years Rattle traps must be a favorite lure of night fishermen. MO
