I have been down in Athens but between rain, wind, and the wife I did not get to hit Lake Athens. That just about killed me. So, when I got back in the Amarillo area and really needed to do some fishing. The weather in Amarillo has been pretty good except for some rain and today they called for sun and only 3 mph wind. So, off to Meredith I go and I found it to be perfect conditions for the tube, which is a rarity.

Because the conditions were good for the tube and I needed some exercise I took off across the lake from the boat ramp rather than hit the tires that I normally fish. First place I hit was a rocky point with some submerged brush and I just knew there would be sunfish there. Using a 1/100th oz jig head tipped with a piece of crawler I set out to test that theory. I was right and started catching these consistently.

None of the sunfish were huge but they were good solid 5-6 inch fish with good colors. The sunfish weren't the only things holding of the point and I took a couple small carp on the same rig I got the sunfish on. While not huge carp they were a lot of fun on the ultralight rig and 4 lb line that I was using.

After hitting several points and getting about 30 sunfish I coved over to a cove that had a ledge and was working the ledge and got into some cats. Nothing huge they went maybe a foot long and they must have been hungry because they were really smacking that jig head. Maybe they thought they were big and mean? I took 4 cats in all off the ledge and they were all pretty much like this one.

After a couple of hours I hit another point and I finally got my first Lake Meredith walleye in the tube and I lost another just like him. I went to a little bigger jig head, 1/32nd oz, tipped with a half a crawler along a rock slide in about 20 ft of water. Lake Meredith is the best walleye lake in the state and I was glad to finally get one.

I know where there are several rock slides so now I have a game plan for the next time I hit the lake. All fish were released except for the walleye which are, in my humble opinion, the best eating freshwater fish of all. I love crappie and big slab bluegills and will wade through hell for a plate of brook trout but walleye beats them all. This one has a date with the cornmeal and bacon grease.

Life is good. Cheers Y'All.

Awesome post!! I love fishing Meredith, I fish it everytime I get a chance! I’m only 30 minutes away from Meredith. I’m glad to see we are on the rise with all of the rain that we have been getting!! The water was pretty stained last week when I was there and it was pretty slow.
