Maybe it's a generational thing but for me a funeral means dress shoes, dress pants, and a shirt and tie, minimum.

smooth leather boots, polished, are acceptable.

Would rather attend the funeral than divorce court.

Only been to a couple over the last couple of years, but the dress code seems to have relaxed a bit. I don’t think anyone is going to critique what you wear. The important thing is, you took the time to attend.

My daughter in law passed away last month at the age of 32.
she requested everyone wear bright colors and not to wear black.

Go pay your respects, don't go pay for another pair of black boots to fit the occasion. You being there shows that you've done the right thing.

For immediate family, I would think a suit is appropriate and this isn't going to be your last funeral so buying dress shoes is worth it.

For friends and casual family, a sports coat and decent slacks would be fitting.

No one will care what you are look like. Wear what you have as the reason is to celebrate the life of your friend.

Wear whatever you are comfortable with. You'll fit right in.

That's been my experience as well, even at the same funeral. People wearing shorts standing next to someone in a full blown suit, standing next to someone who looks like Ozzy.

Nice boots/jeans and a tan coat is good middle ground for alot.

Last two funerals I've been to were at Cowboy Church. First one I was sitting in my truck in the parking lot waiting for my daughter to finish putting on her make up and watching all of the others walking in. I quickly realized that me in my suit and tie were way over dressed. Most everyone attending were dressed in jeans and boots. Lost the tie and still felt a bit self conscious about being over dressed. Second one I wore a nice pair of jeans, collared shirt, sport jacket and boots and felt much more comfortable. But as was mentioned earlier, just showing up to show your respect for the deceased and to provide any support and comfort that you can to the family is the main thing.
