I just got back from a day trip to Lake Fork. The boat motor froze on Friday so I thought I would be stuck on the banks. We wound up hitchin a ride out with a neighbor and getting back in a few coves in tubes. And then it happened. We hooked on with a guy fly fishing back in there and I think I fell in love(with fly fishing, not the guy). He gave me a quick tutorial and let me flip it out there a few times. I didn't hook anything, but I am now hooked on fly fishing. I have had a little rig I got as a gift for about two years and have never used it. I have no clue where, when, how or anything else about getting into fly fishing. Any info, advice, locations, whatever would be appreciated. Thanks.

Too bad you where at Fork today because the Red River Fly Fishers had free casting lessons and a great lesson in catching fish as well from Ol Al up at Lake Texoma. Most of the local fly clubs(fW fly fishers/dallas fly fishers) have monthly meeting and have casting help. Practice your casting on the grass until you get it down. There are a ton of websites online that have casting videos to help with casting. I try to get the fly wet at least 3 times a week and you are more than welcome to tag along and I can show you some pointers and tactics. I live in Grand Prairie and hit up alot of ponds and creeks in the area and do quite well fishing for bass and bluegills.

Thanks Scott...I have been doing some online research. I'm going to try and hook up with the local fly club and get all my gear and casting in order. Once I get to the point where I don't feel like I'd be a burden on someone, I will definitely be looking to tagalong with some more advanced guys to learn tactics and tricks of the trade. So you give me a little time and I will take you up on that offer.

Lots of creeks all around Fort Worth, those and city ponds. And the Trinity River by Forest Park as well as over there east of Lockheed Recreation area off of Bryant-Irvin Rd. Good places to get in and fish for bluegills and bass.
Bass Pro has free classes weekly as well as there are the Fort Worth Flyfishers.
Its late, I'm pooped so this is a short response. But good luck and keep coming back and asking questions!

I really wanted to attend that, but I missed to due to prior commitments. I actually did get the fly rod out this weekend though. I was in waist deep water, getting my roll cast to look reel nice. I caught a little perch palm hand size jigging that fly right at the water's edge too. It was the first fish I've actually ever hooked on a fly, but I don't think that counts. Hopefully one day soon, I find myself looked in battle with a 4-6 lb LMB. I have much to learn, but It's a blast.

Rob Woodruff was tying some deceiver like flys with a rabbit strip tail and epoxy head that looked killer @ Texoma on the Fly. I watched him tie a few and they seem very easy to make.
