With the recent rains, how is the water level at Choke. My last outing saw it rapidly falling.

Mathis should come close to filling up though and Coleto Creek is full.

My folks were out there a week or so ago after it came up to about -18 foot. Dad said they launched from mason point and fished around greyhound point and up the river with lots of open water to operate at speed etc. Like grout says, it come up another 2 foot, should be getting better.

I would expect mathis is already full? But maybe not.

Mathis seems to have a big hole in it, that all the water disappears into. It’s inching up, but I’m starting to wonder if they are letting water out.

The Nueces River below Choke is running at 763 cfs., about normal flow.

I live near the Nueces River bridge off I37. You can see water being let out into the estuary and into Nueces Bay daily. Some folks around here say it’s to wash all the pollutants discharged by the refineries. Also heard it was a contractual agreement to discharge fresh water into the eco-system. Take your pick, water is being released daily. The powers that be just refuse to let the lakes fill up.

Amazing, all the rain that region just had and they still have to let it out.

Choke Canyon will never be a full lake unless there is a major storm from the gulf and it would get to the point where there was no longer any place for the water to go.
The lake wasn't built for recreation which is a bottom of the list priority.
It was built to supplement Lake Corpus Christi to supply the needs of water supply for the city of CC, and for the estuary.
The town of Three rivers sits in the flood plain of the Frio, Nueces, and the Atascosa rivers and there is a big refinery right there that they needed to protect.
The town has a dike around it, that you can see as you head out going south from the town just before you get to the river.
It has a long history of flooding before the lake was built.
Hurricane season is just starting so a full lake is not what they want to see.
That's my opinion, so it's worth nothing, but this is from someone who has been around long before the dam was ever built, and I remember when they were building the lake and took a tour of the lake bottom and when I looked at the tiny creek with a trickle of water flowing into it I laughed at the biologist who was giving us the tour, and remember telling him, "are you kidding me?" This is going to fill the lake?

It may never stay full but it will fill again. When rain falls in the right place. It filled in the 2000's and stayed relatively full for several years. At first I hated it when it filled up, was a different lake to fish. After fishing it a decade fuller than emptier and it went down it was the same way again.
