I’m headed to Caddo on Thursday, any tips you can offer? I’m hoping to stay off the river if possible.

It can be an exercise in futility on the best of days. I’m going to do it anyway. It’s been a long time since I have been there and I’m really looking forward to it. This is the latest in the year I have been though.

Watch out for red wasp nest in trees and snakes falling into the boat from low hanging limbs.

But I’m really not a negative person (lol) just spent some time on Caddo in the past.

Not trying to discourage you but the lake is very high on the rise and muddy right now. There will be lots of current making the fishing tougher but will also position the fish in the downstream side of the trees. Fish should be out in main lake flats around cypress trees in 8-10 ft of water that is normally 6-8 ft deep. Try the deeper flats out in front of potters point. It’s typically a good summer location. My favorite baits this time of year on caddo are orange and red jig heads with anything black or purple in the body. I would suggest calling ahead to whichever ramp you plan to launch at to make sure they are open as several have closed temporarily due to high water

I agree with CrappieXpress, Caddo is 2.8 feet into flood stage and rising. The three lakes that drain into Caddo are all in flood stage and releasing water, Little Cypress and Black Cypress are dumping straight into Caddo. Our bass club moved last weekends tournament due to ramp closures.

Thanks for the info! I’m in a kayak so I know I can get in the lake, I don’t look forward to fighting the current. I have some black and chartreuse jigs I might start off with and will look forward current breaks in deeper water. I’d like to catch fish, but if I don’t, it won’t crush my soul. I can always find some worms and go perch jerking in the shade. Maybe even pitch some perch heads in the shallows and go for grinnel.

Since you are in a yack, you might want to put in at Tuckers Camp, Karnack, TX. There are hundreds of Cypress trees and numerous islands high out in front of the boat ramp. It is away from the river (bayou) near the larger part of the lake, so the current shouldn't be a problem there. The Hard Freeze and high water have pushed or killed most of the Giant Salvinia out of the lake, so the area is not choked up like it was several years ago.

That may be a good plan. Once I get my feet on the ground tomorrow I can see what we are dealing with.
