Ok, I am a long time Palomar knot person but couple of years ago I switch to Flourocarbon line and I had a bad experience with breaking off when I know it shouldn’t. I switch back to Braid and Mono, now I am trying floro again realizing it was the know not the line. So I going to see if anyone else had the same experience and what others that use floro what they use for knots. Been practicing other knots to be a little more versatile

I only use Palomor knot and alberto for braid to fluro. As long as you wet the knot well you wont have problems.

I'm using the Trilene knot for the bait, and Alberto for braid to leader.

I find I have shorter tag ends with the Trilene than I did with the Palomar. That's a good advantage when you're using a 6' leader and retying often.

Always wet every knot

I have been using nothing but a Palomar with fluorocarbon since 2010. I've never had a problem with it breaking. I wet it thoroughly and if it doesn't pull down and tighten evenly I cut it and start again.

If you tie the Palomar correctly you don't even have to wet it. After you have your line doubled through the eyelet make sure the lines are parallel to each other then tie the overhand knot. Put the loop over the hook or bait and let it fall back against your fingers. Now pull the knot back away from the hook or bait, forming a figure 8. Keep doing this as the figure 8 gets smaller. Make sure the loop tightens at the back of the knot and you are good to go. It will tighten up right at the last moment. You can still wet it if you want but you really don't need to. If your lines cross over the hook or the eyelet, with fluorocarbon line it will break, that is why it is so important to keep the lines side by side.

The Pitzen knot is another good one for fluorocarbon line.

You're going to get a lot of "it's not the knot, it's you." I had the same problem. I watched videos, had other guys show me how they tied it, and the results for me were the same--kept breaking off at the knot, especially on hook sets. I'm glad the palomar knot and fluoro works for a lot of guys, but it didn't for me, and it sounds like it's not for you, so I would encourage making a change.

I tried some other knots, and the double pitzen is best one I've found. Easy to tie but really strong. Gary Klein and Shaw Grigsby have a handful of videos on it. Here's one from Klein:

on FC i only use the knot with the 3 tag ends. i think its called the san diego jam knot, or double san diego jam knot. Shaw grigsby and Gerald swindle have easily searchable videos on tying it on youtube. I was running FG knots....but finally had one slip/fail on me. I run super long leaders, and just this weekend tried the alberto and it made it through the daiwa t wing just fine. So either FG or alberto for leaders...whichever you can do right.

its a ridiculously strong knot....and super easy to tie too! Ill look for the gerald swindle video too...he talks about cinching it and those things too....in G Man style! LOL

This is the one I am going with now. Tied its few times now, not hard but I do need to practice it a bit more.

Most likely I am crossing the line, but I don’t see as well as I used to.

Knots wars had the homer circle knot beating the Berkeley braid knot.

Palomar knot and Alberto are the only two knots I need. Always always wet your line well, especially with fluoro.
