I have not visited the pecan lake area in a couple of years but last time up there the big tree was doing OK. The 2016 flood was a little higher but the water doesn't stay up at that level very long so the big tree should be OK.. I hope to go look someday soon. Might kayak in from Birch or Rocky one of these days. From the satellite view the big tree might be struggling with half of it's branches bare.

Thanks Ben! I'll have to try a hike in one of these days I'm looking for some exercise and looking to explore.

Daughter wanted to take some of her graduating tennis teammates out for some hybrid and whitebass action this evening. Thankfully fish cooperated nicely. We found active schools 14FOW. Water temp 80°.

Any hump/drop-off/ridge is holding excellent numbers.

I launched from Yegua Park and fished the rock points and island for blue gill last Thursday evening and caught only 7 or 8. I tried again yesterday evening and caught around 20. They are finally starting to move shallow. That's typical for Somerville.

I didn't see any white bass surfacing during either trip.

I checked on the shad spawn last Friday morning. There were lots of shad around but no spawning. I never once saw the amount of shad spawning on the bank this year any where close to what I've seen in years past. The Freeze, lack of rain and current in the lake leading up to the spawn, then constantly changing temperature and rain conditions...... hmmm

I saw quite a few crappie fisherman during both trips. From what I've seen it's a lot of smaller fish mixed in.

There are still a lot of buffalo and gar in the submerged vegetation as well.

I took a short hike yesterday to a spot where the white bass should have been 3 months ago grin

I had a small popper with a size 10 briminator on looking to see if I could catch some bluegill. Well, I got a big surprise when I started catching white bass. I went through a number of different flies and colors and caught white bass on just about everything I threw at them. I ended up catching 24 white bass. I kept 10 for a friend of mine.

Ben and I took the kayaks up to the spillway on Sunday. There were a few others that had done the same. They were catching a few small crappie. We didn't catch but a catfish, a buffalo and a bluegill. The gates will need to fully open for a couple weeks before I try again. Lake is at 242.2 feet, 4.2 feet above normal, so the COE will likely open the gates fully once the Brazos subsides.

Howdy Oldfisherfart welcome

The COE is still working on the dam and I'm not holding my breath that they will get done anytime soon.

I tried walking in from Lake Somerville Marina last year and the lady put a note on my truck and said she would call the cops if I did it again. Best bet is to kayak up from the 36 bridge.

It's been awhile since I've been on here. Is the spillway at Somerville closed?

The dam road and overlook area are still all closed.
