So I got out yesterday afternoon, got on some good fish, caught a 5+ on a new wakebait, and got the hooks caught in my stakeout pole lanyard / rope while I was getting a photo. While trying to remove two trebles from a thick rope, I decided to use my emergency knife and promptly sliced the tip of my middle finger, deep. Bleeding profusely, can't get to my first aid kit until the bleeding slowed down, yak is anchored, and I'm thinking "if this is how I handle cutting myself, what kind of situation would I be in if I had a real problem!"

So... my takeways from this are:

1. Reposition where I keep the first aid kit so it can be accessed one handed. I'm going to put some items in my PDF pockets as well.
2. Stock the kit with more functional, easy access items. A quick clot gauze bandage and tape would have gone a long way yesterday.
3. Don't use the emergency knife for anything other than a true emergency. That sucker is razor sharp, and for good reason.

Super glue is a good thing to take. Glad it wasn't more serious.

Agreed. Superglue works really well on most cuts. Also, light-duty duct tape works really well as bandaids/butterflies. You can cover a foot blister with duct tape too.

By way of info, it needs to be the old-school "liquid" type of Superglue. The newer gel-type Superglue does not work... it turns into a non-sticky glob as soon as it hits blood.

I always keep a small tube of Superglue and a few feet of duct tape (split in half longways) in my first aid kit.

+1 On the Super glue. Stay away from the Qick clot type stuff unless you are hemorrhaging profusely.
Pressure is you Friend. I did the same thing with my dive knife when trying to do a field repair on my regulator.
took the blade to the bone on my index finger. Had one heck of a meat flap. Pressure and Super glue. never got it stitched.
