My motto is Never, ever get up. I stayed after "Big'Un" from day one in August 1983 until July 1985 when I finially got her in the boat after almost 2 years. Many times had her on the line while I was just baiting it out. I always put the best perch on her side of the river.
We have been tangling/ tangoing with "The Giant" off & on since 2008 or 2009. Intermittent due to to health issues & drought, as well. Time to finally finish this chapter so I can move on.
Anyways, Yellows tend to stay in their apartment/region, so when you get back, try, try again in the same area, basically within 10 feet & you'll give it another go. That's why with me, I use the Calendar to help me consistently knowing when the Yellows strike the most.
Also, Well Done!!! As to the rescue. Hmm, they did not know how to swim.

Thanks Amigos! I sure thought we were going to have better luck. The area we anchored on had an oxbow that was 12ft deep and had 2 flats that were 4 ft with 2 big fallen timber piles on each side. In front of the boat was a 21 ft hole that was holding tons of bait. I had baits out in that 21 ft hole, baits in the 12ft oxbow, and baits in 4 ft on both piles of timber. The big fish came out of 4ft next to the timber. It swam out into the oxbow and we danced for a little bit. When it got done playing with me it headed back towards the timber and it was over. We made a move around 11 and went upstream to a bend in the river with a deep hole and submerged timber in it. It was holding lots of bait and fish and looked real promising. We anchored in 12 ft above the 22 ft hole and put baits in 22ft, 12ft, and some up in 3-4 ft flat with fallen trees. Never got another bite and layed it down at 1am. Man both spots looked incredible and I thought for sure we would get a few but no luck. We’re gonna try again this weekend and if we don’t get one we’ll probably wait until the spawn is over to try again in July. Water was 75 up in there and the main lake was 71. We anchored at the x and the big fish came from the right of that up in between the 2 islands in 4 ft of water.

We’re about to put in and look for redemption. Gonna fish the last hour of day light and the first hour of dark and hope we get lucky! Gotta be some active fish moving up into that current up at the Trinity.

Victory is ours! We fished the mouth of the Trinity in 5 ft. We had baits behind a huge submerged rootball that was breaking the current. We also had baits up against the deadwood, several out on the mud flat of the blow out, and several right on the edge of the channel. Round 2 started off with 5 blues. They all came off the mud flat the blowout was pushing current up onto. We had a good run from the driftwood rod but didn’t hook up. Then right before dark the rootball rod started singing. Got it hooked up and the fish moved out into the channel away from the rootball. After a couple of good runs I got it in the boat. 23 lbr! Victory is ours! We’re gonna head back out Saturday night and see if Jaxon can get him one. I let him fight this fish but he couldn’t do anything with it and I didn’t want to loose another one.

Man that was a great read!
I lucked into a giant (about 40lb, so maybe not giant, but big) flathead about a year ago from the bank not far from where yall were trying on Hickory creek. He took a big hunk of cut gizzard shad. The other 3 flatheads I have caught were while bass fishing with crankbaits. They do like live baits no doubt.
Great job saving those two jet ski folks. Man not being able to swim and being in the middle of the Lake, even with the life jackets, must be scary AF. If I could not swim I think I would stay far away from water... it'd be like I was superman and water is kryptonite.
Keep up the great work! Hope to do some catting soon myself.
