Not with a cast net, I mean with a hook and line. I seen a HUGE mullet today, I mean MONSTER, 2ft long fat head, and I want to catch it, but the only thing I know about mullet is they eat algae. Is it possible to hook one, and how?

I've hooked a few while fly fishing on a chartruese and white clauser. I heard once that they could be caught on white bread under a float with light tackle but I never tried it. Supposed to be a delicacy smoked but haven't tried that either.

they eat 'em smoked in florida a lot, it's a big deal I hear... but the water in florida is a lot cleaner then the water they're in here... I'd eat 'em in florida but I dunno about Texas...
for catchin' 'em my best guess would be to get some smaller hooke and free line some of those little crappie bites... maybe put it under a cork...
I wouldn't know...

Tie a 14-12 hook onto 2-4 lb test and about 2 feet up from the hook attact a tiny tiny pinch sinker.
For bait bread or corn is good.
Cast out when they are FEEDING, let it fall to the bottom, twitch it a few times ones it hits bottom. Reel in, repeat until you catch one.
If that bait isn't working use a small fly jig.

I just moved from Florida and there a ton of people ate them. I never ate them because i used them for bait and I think the easiest way to cathc them is a cast net.

I caught one on a gold johnson spoon in Little Bay in Rockport as I was getting out one morning. When it hit and took off, I thought it was a small red. I was disappointed though it did put up a nice fight

I found this info: http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/authors/leon20.htm It refers to a British mullet, and obviously a lot colder waters, but there is a link on that page, to this page: http://www.thenationalmulletclub.org/gallery.htmThey look pretty similar. I like the tip they have on training them to eat bread! Could easilly drop in a tiny white nymph fly as a bread flake I'm going back down there tomorrow, weather permitting, so I'll take some bread with me, and my trusty 10ft noodle rod - already spooled with 2lb sensithin on an ultralight spinner! Perfect for this sort of thing!!! There's nothing there I can get snagged on (I hope!) If I can get one with a noodle rod, I'll go back and see if I can get one on the fly. If ever the wind stops, that is...damn windy Corpus....

I've only seen 2 caught (oustide of catching alot of them with a casting net) and they were caught on a red bass assassin with a cream colored flip tail. Not sure color names. Both were caught within minutes of each other. Haven't seen it happen since.

I Guys. I have never caught a Mullet on Hook and Line. Always caught them in a cast net. As for eating them , I grew up in West Palm Beach Florida and we only ater what we called the Silver Mullet. We got them in the fall and early winter when they migrated down from up north.Course we also used them for bait for the Blue Fish that came with them. They are realy good smoked.I dont know if you have Mullet runs here or not.If you do find them in the surf see if they are a much brighter silver than the ones that stay around all year.If they are try and smoke some and see for your self.
Yall have a great day.
If only I were smater than the Fish.

Man, I was just thinking about that last night; is there a smokehouse in corpus? We had a local smokehouse back in england, and we'd take our fish there to get smoked for a couple of $$. I love smoked fish. Much more than I love fresh fish. Anyway, I read your post last night, and this morning I was out bright and early, and there was some guy out fishing, and I got talking to him, and he asked me if I had ever ate mullet, lol!!! He then went on to tell me they smoke them and eat them in Florida. What's the chances of that??!?!? The guy was from houston. I mention does he ever read any fishing forums on the net, but I dont think he knew what I was talking about. Wierd, huh? I told him about the magic mullet I've seen swimming about. He probably thought that weird too...

Hook and line fishing for mullet is a waste of time. Your best bet is, indeed, a cast net. Start with a small one, say 6 or 7 footer, follow the directions and you will be netting them in no time. But make sure you know what is under the fish as the castnet will catch rocks and oysters and anything else it falls on. And they usually tear when they get hung up.
The only other way I ever had any luck was when they were schooling in large schools in clear water and we used large treble snag hooks that were weighted with lead between the three hooks. But be careful when you jerk to set the hook as the hooks will occassionally come out of the water and right back at you!
Good luck. And, BTW, the mullet in Florida are very good eating. Don't know about the ones in Texas.
