I have a question about Craftsman tools. Does anybody know if a person can still take broken Craftsman ratchets to Sears and exchange them for new ones w/out any fighting? I know a person was able to do that a few years ago, wondering if ya still can? I tried to call the local Sears but course I got someone who had NO knowledge of tools. So I got frustrated and hung up. Please help!

just walk in there like you own the place. I used to exchange ratchets about once every two weeks. I fanaly got tired of it, told the manager what I did for a living (I work on heavy trucks) and they upgraded me to the pro series at no charge

I haven't had to do it in a couple of years, but I'm sure they still do.
To prove a point to a non-believer, I once cut a wrench in half with a hacksaw and took it in to be exchanged. No questions asked.

They no longer give you a new ratchet. They take the broken ones & rebuild them & that's what they give in exchange. That's actually been their policy since the early 90's & they have just really started to enforce it.

About a decade ago, I found a Snap-On 1/2" rachet EMBEDDED in a blacktop roadway. I dug it out and took it home. It looks terrible, but still works fine. I wish it would die so I could get a nice shiny new one.

Oh really? Daveblank I guess you been going to the wrong place. Every time friends, family, co-workers and me brought in Craftsman tools. They gave us a new one, and that was anywhere Craftsman was sold. Its just been 3 years since I did that and was just wondering if they still did.

I worked for Sears part time from high school until 1999. Like I said it was a policy that was never enforced but they are now. I was just at Town East a few months ago & they have got the program in full swing. They also used to sell the repair kits for $.01. I've still got a 1/4 inch ratchet that has a grease fitting & a few repair kits so I can keep it for a while. The rest of the hand tools are a straight warranty exchange. I aslo exchanged a screwdriver the last time I was there.
CutThroat--Snap On repairs them on the truck while you wait. I've had a few of them repaired.

CutThroat--Snap On repairs them on the truck while you wait. I've had a few of them repaired. I didn't have that luck with Snap On when I was in the Air Force. We used Snap On exclusively for our hand tools. The rep would come in once a month and take all our broken tools. We were lucky if they were replaced in 3 months. I'm sure most of that was a military problem though... not Snap On. The AF makes it so difficult to do business I don't see why any vendor would want to deal with them.

The military contracts are totally different. When I was in the army we used 5/16in drive. I have known a few guys try to get the military items warrantied in civilian life & appearantly they use a totally different part #'s & can't be warrantied by a normal dealer. I've even talked to a dealer or 2 about it & thay confirmed it to me.

I took auto mechanics in high school, was pretty big in it and won my state contest one year. Anyway we had craftsman tools and the shop teacher had a big bin of "broken" tools he just threw broken stuff in. With high school kids there was a lot of broken stuff.
I asked one day if I could have it and he said yes. About once a week for 6 months I took a few items into sears and by the time I graduated I had a nearly full set of craftsman tools. I mean everything too from ratchets, socket sets, some air tools, ring compressors, valve spring tools whatever we broke I got a new one of.

Nah, he knew what I was doing with them. He didn't care. The school board just bought new tools every year. Beauty of government employees......
He was a cool guy tho, after I graduated we raced dirt cars for a while together. Plus when I was in school in my junior and senior year my auto class was the first 2 hours of school so a lot of time I just showed up to school an hour or two late and he would cover. Plus I worked at the auto supply house so I got "credit" for picking up the parts we needed while at work so he didn't have to and could arrive late the next day, or just leave school and go get them.
Don't think schools would fly like that today.
