I wonder if owners of predator animals like lions, tigers, bears or wolves have this discussion, too, when someone gets maimed or killed...it's how you raise them. Not.

My aunt raised several. In CA. of all places. I was out there on business and met her at a pit bull show. Walking around with a hundred pit bulls chained up is a little unnerving. She had a big black male that would jump up to look over the fence. Neighbor thought it was a bear. She had to introduce you to the male before you went in to the house. I know that if have one and are a dependent on Judge Judy you are guaranteed to lose.

I see no good reason to own one. Seems like a huge liability.

Owners should be financially and criminally liable for anything a pit does. They are a 4 legged disaster waiting to happen.

My thoughts have changed on Pitbulls. I agree it is the owners not the dog. So next time a person dies from one, how about the owner goes to jail for murder. I’ve heard it often enough that their fellow pit bull owners would agree to this right?

I believe it is the breed and how they have been bred over time. The owners can try to improve their particular dog, but it usually is just a matter of time. There are literally hundreds of good, generally non violent breeds of dogs out there. I question the judgement of a person who picks a pit as their companion.

there is a reason Home Owner Insurance list these as a NO-GO breed.

I totally agree, but unfortunately most who are insane enough to own pit bulls are not likely to have money or assets that are worth the trouble. Maybe the criminal liability would work.

So if someone's pit kills a kid should the owner be charged with 2nd degree murder or just manslaughter?

Most likely is going to depend on the circumstances of the situation. EX: Did the owner command the dog to attack, or did the dog get out and unknowingly attack someone in their yard?

^^^This. I've owned 3 in my life. 2 Stafordshire's and 1 American Pitbull. Never had an issue out of any of them. Ringo, the dog on Little Rascals was a Pitbull. So is the RCA Records Mascot.
