Thinking about heading out west and trying a new lake. Never seen it before and dont even have a map of the thing. Running the lake pretty straight forward? Decent places to stay around the lake?

I know there are big fish in it, but are finicky, and apparently the spots are getting HUGE compared to what we find down here in the metromess area.

I was hoping to catch "the week" on AH this year but it's gonna have to be next year.

The last time I was there, and it's been awhile The water was the prettiest and blue water I have seen except for the Caribbean. Public water supply for city of Lubbock. I'm not sure about places to stay but have fun and catch some big fish.

Only really one place to stay that I know of at AH and it's expensive. Getting into the park is also going to cost you an arm and a leg. IMO the lake doesn't fish well enough to justify the cost. As far as running, it is pretty straight forward. Lake has some big fish in it, but overall isn't near as good as it once was.

I like your commitment. You have to drive past 5-6 really good lakes to get there from Weatherford.

Just would be nice to see some new water. The 3 hour drive west is the same drive it takes me to get to most of the good lakes in East Texas so its not anything different.

Was thinking I would like to see some new water.

Go to Hubbard Creek. It will be a much better trip and you can stay with Stompy.

Just got back from a 3 day trip down there. Have always loved that lake, and Ivie too.
We had a great 2 day tournament this past weekend weighing in 46 lbs in 2 days.

It's only an hour and a half from where I live and there ain't much water out here at all. It is the closest lake to me and I haven't even fished it in about 4 years. Sure you have a chance at a big fish but when I lived in Lubbock and went there every other weekend, I realized that it is one of the worst lakes to fish in Texas. Extremely finicky bass, mostly dinks and it costs a ridiculous amount of money to fish it. $22 a day if I fish by myself now.

Have only been to HC one time myself and have been telling myself I need to go back ever since. I just keep going the opposite way to Fork instead. roflmao
Truly is a great fishery and was my first time seeing vegetation in a lake like that.

How do you go about getting a boat permit? Is it pay at the ramp, or is there a store that sells them? Hell it costs $20 bucks to fish Eagle Mountain now, so that's nothing new.

It’s more than $20 if you don’t live in Lubbock. If I remember right it was $30 the only time I went

It’s a really beautiful lake and worth fishing at least once. Don’t listen to the negative stuff, just go fish and have fun. There are some true giants in the lake along with easy to catch spots. I know a few guys that live out there that consistently do well on AH. Sure, it aint what it was in 2004-2008, but the fish are there.

Easy to run, not much timber to worry about. The fish spawn a little later than most of Texas, so late April-May should be prime out there. Saw a 14lb caught on a bed in June years ago. Not sure about where to stay, there used to be a place with rooms on the main road into the lake.

Sight fish, flip the bushes, deep crankbaits around the ledges and rock points.

You pay for each individual entering the park plus the boat fee. It's currently $36 for two anglers and a boat on the weekend. You'll see the permit office as you're going into the park. It has a little self-pay machine.

There's a decent hotel in Post, I think its' a Best Western with plenty of parking. Snyder is a tad further, not much, but has a Hampton, Holiday Inn Express, and Fairfield and more restaurants. Check out the Ponderosa in Snyder. They have a burrito that can feed your entire family.

There is a pay station as you drive in to the ramp.
