Not eating is a big sign. Another is when he can't get up to go to the bathroom on his own.

Your friend sounds like he is still eating. If he is not going to to the bathroom on himself and is happy to see you, he has some time left.

Being humane is the cost of pet ownership, but it is worth it. I feel for you and your friend...

Try some soft foods and see if he can eat that...his teeth may be bothering him. He may have an abscess...Look in his mouth and smell his breath.

Put one down that was incontinent and one that couldn't get up after some strokes. Hard choices...and I have a twelve year old that already is struggling to get up. Makes you wonder why we put ourselves through it.

Had a vet ask me three things my dog loved to do. If your dog can't do any of them you have a descension to make. Rest assure. When a dog leaves this walk of life, his new home is in Heaven. angel2

Tough decision but I’ll say I was selfish and kept my Boxer about 5 months too long. I couldn’t do it during holidays and he suffered for it. I still miss him. Good luck.

The night before I put down the best dog I ever had, the other dogs knew it was coming. The other dogs laid with him on his pillow. They never did that before. Sam was Man’s best friend, he sure was mine. You never get over them

It was a little after we were thinking when, but she let us know when she was ready.

I've had to put two down in the last year. One was the best dog ever. The worst part was we were out of town and didn't get to spend much time with her before we had to put her down. Second, we only had for a few weeks when she got run over and we had to put her down. It's never easy, but you know when it's time.

A+ on the soft foods, he scarfed it down! He’s up and happy, the glands/lymph nodes or whatever is going on is tender, going to get him in somewhere tomorrow.

I'm glad he ate...he probably has some mouth pain and that is hopefully the reason for his change in attitude and eating...I hope it's something simple. Dogs are just awesome...I don't know that I will get another one once Oreo is gone, it's just so hard to say goodbye.

This. I just couldn't do it. We both suffered longer than we should have. Do what has to be done for your best friend. Don't put it off thinking it'll get better, it won't. Don't let him down. He'll thank you later with kisses and tail wags.

My dog had multiple seizures one night about a month ago, I thought she was going to die in my arms. Finally got her calmed down and able to walk, then gave her a Tramadol that knocked her out for about 8 hours. Now she acts like nothing happened, but I know it is the beginning of the end. Now I am relishing every moment with her.

worst part of owning dogs for sure , my wife and I were having this discussion before the Holidays , trying to keep our 16 year old Yorkie alive so she could make it through to the new year . Just a few days before Xmas , we took her in to get bath and haircut ---- she ended up dying of a heart attack in our groomers arms . I have never seen 4 ladies cry so much ever .

That is good news. Will be keeping both you and your dog in my prayers. The Lord Jesus Christ has control no matter what the outcome. angel2
