Guys y'all have been so helpful! I had a couple more crappie questions if y'all don't mind?

In north texas:

1) Are we currently in the beginning, mid/peak, or towards the end of the spawn?

2) About how long does the spawn last?

3) Will they immediately move back out deep after the spawn?

It would appear that we are on the downward slope. It will last quite a while from the end of Feb. until mid April. Fish will spend some time in the 8-12ft range before moving deeper. Many fish never come past this depth and will spawn much deeper. Every lake behaves a little differently. Glad you joined the madness!

I've caught crappie spawning in late May.

After the spawn, the shad will dictate where the crappie locate. The shad spawn takes place this month on most lakes. And the shad stay shallow, 12 ft or less, until maybe first of July. When the water gets hot in July-Sept the shad seek good nutrient water with oxygen. Most lakes develop a thermocline in hot summer when water temps reach 87 and above. Below that thermocline oxygen is very low. The thermocline is at different levels depending on the lake and how much wave action mixes the water. Some lakes it's at 12 ft and others it's as deep as 20-22 ft.

2.Mid April they start slowing down here in mid Texas
As I will still get some here and there on the real shallow bite till the first of may to mid
Thursday when I went it was real slow in the creek I’ve been slaying them in so
I moved out to the timber and there was the numbers I was looking for and qualify
fish.

3. Yes they will be close by spawning areas in structure for a long time after the spawn I will catch crappie on shallow timber , condos , brush and docks from 6 to 15 ft . All the way to the end of June. Early in morning work shallow as it heats up go deeper. Good luck


Ps : never give up on the shallow bite though this time of the year. Just because they wasn’t thick in the creek I had been getting them in doesn’t mean they won’t be back in there as they spawn in patterns. I’m just saying I’ve notice it slowing down. Each trip is different than the last one the trick is having options thinking outside the box and putting fish in the boat.

As mentioned it the spawn times really depend on the lake you're fishn..... Deeper lakes the fish seem to start the spamming process later and shallow lakes really....
As I always say don't let best conditions dictate when you go fishn, just go when time allows..... It will help you with spending more time on the water and find the pattern that best suit the crappie in your lake.....
