Also is it worth the extra cost to spring for an upgrade to Class 4 shingles?

35 year shingles?? In North Texas no reason to pay for that upgrade. Hail will get you on 15 year average.

thats not how it works

He did my roof and it turned out great.

100sqft just about everything in the roofing business is figured by the SQ.

Even things that aren’t sold by the square can be priced by the square, that’s how roofers can fire off a price per square to replace a roof because while there’s lots of variables, they’re mostly the same roof to roof.

A square is 10’x10’ or 100 s.f.

100 square foot, 10x10 and comes out to 3 bundles of shingles.

makes a difference if roof is a hip or a gable or a mansard or texas hip etc. lots of different styles and pitches and the sq ft will change with each type on the same house below.

got pics of roof?

Also, a steep roof will have an upcharge. At least mine did.

Have your insurance company look at it. I’m an adjuster it’s what we do. My personal opinion is Class 4 shingle upgrade is a waste. I’ve bought too many roofs damaged by hail that’s not supposed to be big enough to damage them. Get quality laminate shingle and it will last through what it should and you will get hit by a storm that insurance can help with replacement before it’s too worn out.

that is the same advice the roofer himself gave me, i got more quotes coming and the insurance adjuster as well. The roof is still "working" as in no leaks yet, but its old and i think its time. I'd like to get it fixed BEFORE it starts leaking and we don't know until the ceiling caves in (again) ya know?

Exactly bc a leaking roof isn’t always covered by insurance. Always depends on why it’s leaking. Glad it’s not currently. Quotes aren’t always needed. Let insurance write it up and find a contractor you want to work with and let them work together.

If you had a 40' roof and a 12/12 pitch it would sound like a deal! So many factors.
